Purty brass

Post by earlmck »

A couple days ago I ran all my WW 30/30 brass through the full length sizer followed by a good wash in the old Thumbler's. This morning when I went to gather up all those laid out on the towel to dry I had the thought that "ain't that purty!". And maybe about the only folks who might have that very same thought are found right here, so thought I'd take the picture and post it.

And here is the main rifle (Marlin 336A) that will use those, although we have a couple more in the family (Win 94 and Savage bolt) which motivated the full-length size operation.

Must be the season. Yesterday cleaned and polished 100 Black Powder (BP) fired .45-2.1" (AKA .45-70) cases in the Thumbler, today I did 50 BP fired 50-70 cases.

Must be in the air. I took 50 pieces of W-W 30-30 that someone left in the range box and necked them to .321 then cleaned them and loaded them with Lyman 321297 cast bullets over 27.5 grs of 30-31. Then loaded 100 32 WCF's.

Nice brass, nice rifle. Appears to be a first- or second-year 336, correct?

One of my boys' pals gave me a HUGE Dillon vibratory cleaner. I toss my loaded cartridges in to polish them, and then rake them out with my fingers; gives me kind of a Scrooge McDuck thrill...

Good eye, airedaleman. 1950 mfg date. This one had the "Marlin Jam #1" which motivated a friend to pass it on to me for the $150 he'd paid for it. I fixed the jam thing with a piece of old teaspoon handle and some JB Weld and she's been flawless ever since. Probably my favorite shooter.

Yes, I cut a slice out of an old teaspoon handle to give me a little metal to add to the bottom of the carrier to make it come up a little quicker. Posted on it a few years ago with pics http://www.levergunscommunity.com/viewt ... marlin+jam and other folks chimed in with different techniques to do the same fix.

You know Earl....I thought I was the only one with a sick mind......I too, love looking at a pile of brass all shiny.

Do you mind if I join you in a day of happiness, just fondling our fingers through the brass?----6

Hey, maybe we can have some kind of a club that unique to brass handlers. We can call it "brass handlers anonymous"

I have to agree -

There is something welcome and beautiful about shiny brass.

I think that part of it is the cheerful golden glow, and part of it is the promise of what the cases will become, and part of it is linked into the reminiscence of the satisfaction of working up a load and then seeing it poke holes in targets or - - whatever.

Given this economy, of course, it is currency, as well. Scrooge McDuck would enjoy bathing in a pool of the stuff.

Sometimes you're almost too much, Six. And dang but that's a nice pile of brass you've got there. My little pile, that doesn't look like much spread out on the towel, went over 300 rounds. So you must have a good thousand there....

Earl, I didn't realize you had a Savage bolt gun in .30 WCF -- a 340?
I have a Thumlers and bought the stainless steel pin media. I am impressed with the job they do, but I need a better way to strain and dry the pins ...

re: straining the pins.

Go to your local paint store and purchase a nylon paint strainer. It looks like a nylon laundry bag, 'cept the mesh is extremely small. I believe that I purchased a 5 gallon bucket size. When done tumbling, I just pull the strainer over the tumbler, turn upside down, rinse out the pins and brass while in the bag, then separate the brass to drying rack or tray.

If memory serves, I bought two bags for about US$6.00, inc. sales tax.
