What are the other two shorter shifter's on the floor for?

The longer of the two levers when pulled back engaged the front axle in "high range," that is, without reduction in the transfer case. The shorter of the two levers selected either "power take-off" in which there was no drive to the axles but if PTO equipped with a bolt-on on the transfer case other accessories could be driven with the vehicle stationary. Pushing the shorter lever fully forward engaged the lower range reduction of the transfer case. Dad had a '62 Jeep Station Wagon with that setup. His '66 Wagoneer had a single lever that performed the same function when moved to the rear (4WD), moved right and halfway forward (PTO, or road tow), or fully forward (4WD Low) in a U-shaped shift gate.

I didn't realize these o'll gems had PTO capabilities.
I too would love to have a restored one in either a wagon or pickup truck.

The only downside to the Willys is a HUGE turning radius. They will climb straight up.

On my 1952 M38 (military version of the CJ3A) T90 3 speed shifter on the left, followed by shifter for Front Axle either in or out (original jeeps didn't have locking hubs and this shifter allowed you to lock in the front end), and the shifter on the right was the transfer case either in Low, Neutral, or High. If you had a PTO or a Warn Overdrive there would be a 4th shifter.

That's the type I have seen. They used this 3 stick configuration at least thru the mid 60's - my buddy had a 1966 & that's how it was configured.

The Spicer 18 is a great transfer case. Very compact and durable for low to moderate horsepower input. Jeep used them for 25 years in everything they made.
Two big advantages are the twin stick and the layout offsets both pumpkins to the passenger side so you could straight-line the big rocks under the drivers side.
Twin stick conversions are availible for the later and excellent Dana 300 transfer.
Aftermarket Atlas transfers are twin stick also.

I don't know if it's a local thing or not but around here they refer to the flathead 6 as the hurricane 6.

The, 4 was called the Hurricane.
The 4 that preceded the Hurricane was the Go Devil.

I know where there's a '53 w/a 289ci Ford. Runs, but needs a little cleanin' up. Probably a battery & tuneup. Comes w/anti-tampering device... hornet's nest next to hood latch!

Yes, the 6 was a Super Hurricane, at least mine was.
When I was in Az I saw a fair number of the Willys that were updated with more modern drive lines and other amenities, like PS and PB. All would be a welcome addition after driving one that was all original. Top speed on the hwy with the Super Hurricane was about 55 with full time locked hubs, maybe 60 with Warn manual hubs unlocked. A tailwind was especially appreciated, as was a downhill grade. They would do amazing things offroad though.

Shift patterns for the 1953 Willys:
In the right diagram, the tall shift lever is the 4WD "Out - In" function, and the short lever is the "Low - Neutral - High" function for the transfer case reduction.

when I lived in Calif a friend had a 1947 (?) with a souped up Buick V6 in it.
the darn thing would lift the front tires off the ground on a hard take off!
