New Winchester 1873
Why in the world would they make a classic gun like the 73 in 357 Magnum and not a classic cartridge like
44-40 or another? Has this been discussed previously, I was so surprised when I saw that, don't have any interest in a classic rifle in 357 Mag.

They are aiming for the cowboy action shooters.

A .357 short rifle is WAY down the road, but that is the one I want. (Unless I find an 1894 Marlin for a reasonable price)

Re: New Winchester 1873
It's all in marketing and what brings in the bucks. Most shooters are not reloaders and most shooters are not nostalgic, therefore it makes lots of sense to chamber it in a cartridge that is the most available to the common guy.
As far as I'm concerned, it makes a lot more sense to buy an original as an original common garden variety '73 can be had for what those Japs are charging for their guns. At least here in southeast Pa., that's what you can snag one for.......if you know where to look and have the knowledge to filter through the junk.
A couple of months ago I did have my hands on one of those repos and I sadly must admit those WW2 animals know how to manufacture an American made icon even though their high command does not allow their citizens to own one.--------6

Not a cowboy action shooter but I picked mine up in .357 today and it is SWEET!

I'd be looking at the Uberti Winchester '73 in 44 magnum. Probably 2nd in popularity to the 357 magnum, but the most versatile with lots of component availability. Heavy straight walled case, Carbide Dies, molds, bullets everywhere, takes all kinds of powders.

Re: New Winchester 1873
I meant if I were just starting out.
I have an original converted to a short rifle 45 Colt, still have my 1st 1873 rifle 44WCF, 38WCF, and a Uberti 73 SRC 44 Special which is a dream to shoot.

Re: New Winchester 1873
Regardless of what the "experts" say, I'm just leery of the .44Magnum in a '73 action.

Re: New Winchester 1873
I wonder what the differences/interchangeable parts are between the original , the Italian or Japanese copies?
The new Uberti '73 in 44 magnum released about 3 years ago also has a blued receiver like the new Japchester.
No color case receivers. 3 plus years and no one has one to report.
Why can a Winchester be made in Japan and marked WINCHESTER, but cannot be made in the USA?
(it's not like any of them are selling at bargain Cracker-Jack prices!)

Aren't some Model 70s, and some shotguns made in USA on the southern east coast?Centennial wrote:I wonder what the differences/interchangeable parts are between the original , the Italian or Japanese copies?

Yes I think so.
But almost all the 19th century guns invented by American firearms inventors, especially lever actions, are only made by our former enemies, the WWII AXIS Power countries.

If we boycotted every country that has shot at the USA, the world would be a very lonely placeCentennial wrote:Yes I think so.

No boycott word inferred in there. Just a couple of questions.Centennial wrote:I wonder what the differences/interchangeable parts are between the original , the Italian or Japanese copies?

The Early Uberti 73's were similar enough that some parts could be used in the original Wins. for instance those guns had toggle links that could be made to work in the Wins. The current Uberti toggle links have larger link pins.
The Italian made Chaparral parts are much closer. But the QC can be a problem.
The problem with making these guns here in the USA is the expense. If that gun were made here you can expect to pay about $2000 or so. Think about it. The new Henry is USA made and it is basically the same gun at least in mechanism and that is about what it cost.

Re: New Winchester 1873
Thanks Nate Kiowa Jones.
Here's this link to the new 1860 Henry copy, made in the USA, $2300 msrp, like you said.
www.henryrifles.com/rifles/the-henry-original/
It's almost a custom rifle. It seems our money doesn't go as far as it use to, so we just have to make more.
Have you ever seen one of the Italian import EuroArms 1873 Winchester copies that were made in 44 magnum?
This was back in the 1970's to 80's.

I've worked several of the EuroArms 73's but have never seen one in 44mag.

If Henry would make the Big Boy .357 in blue/walnut I'd be there in a second....I really don't like that brass one little bit.
