Does anyone lube magazine springs?

Post by Winchester73 »

Just wondered if anyone ever lubricates the long coiled magazine spring on their lever rifles?
I know there are dry lubes about, but is it necessary to lube them at all?
It concerns me that lube of whatever sort may rub off on the inside of the magazine tube and contaminate cartridges - we're always told it's a bad thing to have oil or lube on cartridge cases.
Just wondered what the general consensus is.

I have but only when I've taken them down and found rust, quite common on second hand guns.

Yes. But only once when I first buy the gun and then maybe in a blue moon. I dip them in Ed's Red and then wipe thoroughly before reassembly.
Kind regards,

After a rainy hunting season cleanup I pull the plug and spring from
the tube. I then wipe everything off with lightly oiled cotton cleaning
patch, and then swab the tube with a lightly oiled proper sized bore swab.

I had to clean and lube the magazine spring on my 92 to get out the cosmoline and crud when I first bought it. Since then, only once when it started to get rough. I usually leave the others alone unless they show signs of trouble.

No. Clean & Dry. MAYBE a bit of dry powder lube, but not much.

A mag spring/follower that collects dust & grit on oil is going to bind in ways a oily/gritty action won't.

And nobody likes a gritty action.

What I do as well - very lightly oiled patches.

Yes, because they rust here otherwise.

Not heavy sticky stuff. Nothing designed for penetration. I don't leave it wet.

I wouldn't just spray oil in there.

They need to be cleaned from time to time whether lubed or not since carbon will enter the rear of the magazine over time, with lubes from the action.

Hardly ever, but when I do, I wipe the spring down with a bit of old cotton t-shirt material lightly dipped in Johnsons Paste Wax, then take the same bit of t-shirt and swab the inside of the cleaned (usually with mineral spirits, then a clean cloth) magazine tube. Go back to the spring by now and wipe off any excess Johnsons with some more clean t-shirt cloth, then clean out the tube again.
Thank goodness for old, holey underwear!

I do not lube my magazine tube or springs per sea but I do wipe them down with Industrial PCL when on occasion I take them apart for cleaning or any other reasons. I've never had problems with any built up of debris from this practice.

I run a swab down the mag tube just like the bore, and use a patch to run the spring through it.

This is the area almost always forgotten and can causes those strange feeding problems that resist trouble shooting the cause. I pulled my spring in the 444 years ago and found it was a mess. Since then a yearly clean and lube of the tube, spring, and follower on lever magazines is done. It is never very dirty anymore so it is quick and easy on the fluids to control the mess.

I wipe the spring down with a thin coat of gun oil. I'll wipe a thin coat in the tube.

Yes. I oil every part that experiences friction or can rust.
