Re: 1873 Winchester rifles
I have one like your standard barrel 24", also 19th century made. I think that heavy barrel is rare, never seen one only read of them in George Madis WINCHESTER book. I use to use it quite a bit. I should get it back out, it always works. As I recall the groove diameter is .431". I never had a 44-40 that was .427".

Centennial, you sure are right about those .44 bores . You never know what you have until you slug it. The heavy barrel is rare, not very many made. Lucky this one has a very good bore. Thanks casastahle. Glad you like them,,,,Dusty

Re: 1873 Winchester rifles
Here is a pic. of a circa (1892 ) 1873 SRC 44wcf. Not a rifle but a handy little carbine ,I just replaced the wood . Had to, the old wood was real bad. The little carbine has been re-blued . I'd rate the bore about a 7or8. It's a shooter,,,,,Dusty

Re: 1873 Winchester rifles
Here is a little better pic. of the 1873 Winchester 28"hvy. barrel .44wcf set trigger. The old rifle started life in 1885 ,and it shows the scars of a working rifle. With bullets cast from a Winchester mould of the same vintage and Swiss 2ff bp. the old rifle can still turn in good groups at the range. DT.

Nice guns there Dusty.
I have a heavy barrelled 1873, but the barrel is not a 28"
Mine is a Daisy marked rifle - because I am an Australian I like the Australian import mark.
How many of these things have you got?
Keep posting pictures until you run out.
Pop.

Re: 1873 Winchester rifles
Glad you fellows like the pic. I never get tired of looking at old rifles and figgure others are that way too. Uberti makes a fine 73. How about a pic. of that Daisy Pop Watts? What lenth hvy. barrel, and cal. is the 73 that you have? I saw one 1873 Winchester marked with the Daisy mark for sale a few yrs. back. If I remember right it was a .32wcf. half- mag. I have been getting that (How many you got question ) from the Mrs. as of late. Think I'll keep that under my hat. ,,,,DT.
Re: 1873 Winchester rifles
This post inspired me to dig my old vin. 1893 model 73 in 38wcf out of the safe Saturday evening.
I forgot just how addictive black powder cartridge shooting is.

Re: 1873 Winchester rifles
The 28" one is a real beauty. Can I have it?
Get yourself a micrometer and measure the breech end and the muzzle. The breech on a third model with the heavy barrel should measure .956 with the muzzle going .820
Standard was .892 and .756
Because yours is an early third model, sometimes parts from the second model were used and it's possible a heavy barrel from a second model got put on your rifle. 2nd model heavy barrels started out at 1.100 with the muzzle going an even inch.
Some standard barrels had a slow taper and are heavy at the muzzle, giving it the appearance of a heavy barrel. These started out at .878 and ended at 842.
I have an 1881 Marlin with a 30" extra heavy octagon barrel that starts at 1.050 and ends at .920. It shoots like a scoped bolt action rifle. Dang thing weighs 12 pounds.
If you ever decide to sell that 28", I'm always buying -----6

Nice rifles Dusty.
Did you get some of that rain last Thursday? 2 inches in Giddings!! A nice mid summer drink for the place.
I put one sow to sleep with my thermal sighted rife on Saturday. I let the coyotes eat it so they would be
less tempted to chase fawns.
