When I Used A Circe 3-1 Rabbit Call

Post by Blaine »

I didn't want to step on the Electronic v. Mouth call thread.

So, I usually get my deer/cougar/bear because the seasons coincide. I had a sweet spot I'd hike into that was a huge bowl on top of a tall ridge. I'd run The Can doe bleat, and then the Circe 3-1 Rabbit call for bear/cougar, and maybe a coyote. Almost every time, I'd get a dang raven to come in, and he would see me, and call his buddies. They would fly high above me giving warning calls. I just know that's what they were doing. I eventually took a decent blacktail there, but, not until I stopped using the Circe call so the ravens would leave me alone.

That's the dinner bell for them to, you know you are hid good when they come in silent and land, it happens with all calls not just Circe.

I once was calling with my Circe call and called in a bow hunter. He came in slowly from about 200 yards. I did not shoot him for they stink and are hard to clean.

My friend Hal Swiggett holds the Calling Record I believe. Down on the Texas border in the Big Bend Country he once called a Mexican all the way into the United States! The guy was working in Mexico and heard the rabbit squeal and came in slowly with his shovel all cocked, ready to whack the rabbit. He was surprised to find Hal. Hall gave him a call and he went back to Mexico tooting it.

Then, up in Maine, Hal called in an Ojibway Indian from Canada!

I have called deer and coyotes from quite a distance but I never had a border crossing in all my years of calling.

I have the same call. It's never produced any thing for me either. According to the bear hunter magazine you should just wail endlessly on the thing. I'm going bear hunting this morning, but I left the call at home.

Huckleberry is an 80lb Yellow Lab. The owl came and landed on a tree branch about 6ft over his head. He was so focused on his ball he didn't see the owl until the owl saw me and flew up to a higher perch and just watched us for a while. I think it was a young owl and was just very curious, not aggressive at all.

OK, here we go.
At my primary place in the N.M. mountains, I have a chain link fence around the place.
So, I keep Gus my 70 pound "black" lab on a cable or he will run off to play in the river.
One day Gus is barking and won't shut up, I go out and look and there is a mule deer doe in the far corner; afraid of Gus.
So I unhook him and start into the house so the doe can make her way out of the yard.
Gus is smart, he waits for the exact right second and breaks away from me; chasing the doe.
I know where this is going so I head for the opposite corner, there deer, dog,and mescalero all meet.
Wrestling on the ground with 70 pounds of black lab, 125 pounds of mule deer, and one skinny mescalero; you   can imagine the carnage.
The mule deer got away, Gus came back after about 45 min. of me dressing my wounds.

The circe 3-1 has been a great call for me over the years, created lots of memorable moment's in my life.

I have only owned one call that was better on Coyotes, and none that were better on Grey fox and bobcat for me.

It worked well enough that I was worried using it out by myself. Too many stories of cougar sneaking up to your back :? Where I hunt, I'll wager there is a bear and cougar everyplace I go.

Last time I was coyote calling in Ca we had a cougar stalk us. Didnt see it but the fresh tracks 10 yards behind us that weren't there when we walked in sure convinced us to call it quits for the day. Cant remember which call we were using on that set.

I used a Circe call for my early years. I had a large owl swoop me and hit my hat. They are silent flyers and it was nerve racking. I make sure now if I'm night calling I'm in my Polaris UTV Ranger with a top. RR7
