Most famous S&W, Colt ?
Simple question, what is the most famous model of S&W and Colt?
Re: Most famous S&W, Colt ?
Dirty Harry 29, Colt 1911?
Re: Most famous S&W, Colt ?
S & W Schofield? I prefer the New Model Three Target myself, but that's not so well known.

Famous you say OS?
That's a no brainer. The model 29 Smith and the single action Colt
The most popular would be the model 10 Smith and the 1911.----6

Colt SAA and then S&W Model 29 44 magnum.
Probably the most copied revolver in the world is the Colt SAA, then the 1911, then Browning Hi-Power?.

Six, interesting that you think that is the only answer. Maybe on the Colt you are right. This place is old and getting older but comes from a certain period for the most part.

Individual ones, how about Patton's Colt SAA, and S&W .357?

FWIW, IMO "famous" is not the same as "popular", so I vote:
Colt:
#1- the SAA.
#2 - the 1911.
#3 - the Python
S&W:
#1 - Dirty Harry's 8-3/8" Model 29 ( I know, due to scarcity, an M29 wasn't used in the films).
#2 - The Kit Gun
#3 - the Chief's Special
.

Pete, seems to me at one time we saw the Model 36 in every police or detective show. Wonder how many carry them now?

A "grenade" labeled Glock.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

Wasn't Dirty Harry's mod. 29 a 6"?Pete44ru wrote:.

6 1/2" actually. They didn't even it off to an even 6" til a few years later.

Ray Liotta pistol whipping the guy in Goodfellas comes to mind, as it cuts to a still of the bloody gun when he hands it to his girlfriend to hideOld Savage wrote:Pete, seems to me at one time we saw the Model 36 in every police or detective show. Wonder how many carry them now?

Re: Most famous S&W, Colt ?
I agree with Sixgun, but I also think both the Smith 686 and Colt Python deserve honorable mention for desirable .357

Re: Most famous S&W, Colt ?
Nowadays when i watch a cop movie from the 70's or 80's , i will pause it on the revolver scene to try to determine if it was a Smith or a Colt --- geez
Always an entertaining scene for me --- Danny Glover, the "old school" revolver shooter vs MEl Gibson with his auto in LEthal Weapon (no comment on the political leanings of these guys' )

Re: Most famous S&W, Colt ?
I'll vote most "famous" Colt is the 1911. Although I wouldn't argue with those who said Peacemaker.
The most famous S&W may be the 29 due to the Dirty Harry movies. It's not the top selling S&W by a long shot, but even folks that don't know the model 29, know that Harry had a 44 magnum.

Re: Most famous S&W, Colt ?
I would have to say the Colt SAA and the S&W mdl 29. Most popular would be the 1911 & the models of the S&W K frame.

I think the Colt M16 which evolved into the AR15 would have to get consideration.

Re: Most famous S&W, Colt ?
For the general population it has to be Dirty Harry's 44 Magnum revolver and John Wayne's Colt .45 Peacemaker.
Re: Most famous S&W, Colt ?
Maybe detectives carried a Model 36 but when you think of a uniform cop, he's carrying a Model 10.
