what levergun in 45 Colt had no safety?

Post by MacEntyre »

A friend pointed out that what I want may not have been made except by Rossi.

The early Rossi 92 was chambered in 45 Colt, and had no safety.

Did Marlin or Winchester have a rifle chambered in 45 Colt before they added cross bolt or tang safeties?

Did Henry make a levergun in 45 Colt with a loading gate and no safety?

Are there Italian replica 45 Colt rifles that have no safety?

My 20 year-old Miroku Winchester 1892 HAD a tang safety that has been removed. I think some 94s (trappers?) were made before the cross-bolt. Not posiitve.

Dunno the answer, but if all you want is to own a 45 Colt levergun without a 'safety', there are numerous easy 'fixes' for the ones that have them.

I'm not sure of the status of current Rossi's but all the ones I saw at the time of my purchase had a rotating safety drilled into the top of the bolt. They are super easy to remove and there are no rebounding hammers and such. I'm willing to bet some of the Italian rifles have no safeties but I do not know for sure. Look for a levergun that still has a half cock hammer. If it has that, your good to go and you will love it. 8) -Tutt

I have an older Rossi with no safety, I don't remember when I got it to shoot cowboy action but bought it new. Sometime after 2003 when I got back from Africa.

My grandson has a 92 Hartford 20 inch carbine in .45 Colt in my safe that does not have a safety.

My Winchester Trapper 45 Colt has no safety, great little rifle. I also have 2 Rossi's without a safety, 44-40 and 357.

Just picked up a new Uberti 73 short rifle, In .45 Colt, with no safety, other than the half-cock notch.. None of my older Uberti 73s had safeties either..

Older Rossis don't have added safeties, and Italian-built rifles don't either.

MacEntyre,
Before you buy a 92, try the heft of a 73 carbine. That is unless you just have to load those heavy loads for ???? Much smoother action, you can put in a short stroke kit, aluminum lifter etc. and the 73 after a slick up is just untouchable by the 92s.
Now for me, the 73 short rifle with the half round, 20 inch barrel is just perfect but I have friends who prefer the carbine and I must admit it is very good. I've never seen a 73 with an added safety.

FWIW, I had a .45 Rossi M92 with the bolt-top safety which I promptly removed from the bolt (open bolt, tap out the retaining pin & lift the safety up/out) and replaced with a drop-im bolt peep sight, similar to Steve's bolt peep.

I removed the weird parts from the Miroku/Winchester 92 and replaced them with Browning 92 parts. Need to make a filler for the tang safety hole like Ganjiro did. May have one made from silver (someday).

I'll do that! Thanks for the suggestion!

I found an older Rossi 92 in 45 Colt, but now I have an excuse to look into getting another rifle... ;)

There's a Uberti 1873 in 45 Colt for sale at a LGS that I looked at recently... I thought it was priced reasonably at $850.

Looked at it more closely... it's an immaculate Uberti 1866 (with no safety, of course). Don't those usually go for much more $$$ ???

They can... but in good used shape... that sounds about right.

Thanks! I'm not going to get it... just trying to figure out the market while admiring nice rifles. ;)

I bought an early Rossi 92 45 Colt from a friend.
