Monte Walsh

Post by aussie »

Just watched Monte Walsh on DVD starring Lee Marvin and Jack Palance. What a great movie. I have the Tom Selleck version and have watched it many times. Both versions have their merit and I really couldn't choose between them. If you haven't seen the Lee Marvin version, I would certainly recommend doing so.

I remember watching the one with Lee Marvin in the movie theatre years ago. Pitchy bought the Lee Marvin version online not long ago.
I agree, they're both good.

Well stuff. I didn't even know there was another version besides the Tom Selleck one. Guess I need to buy it.

Both versions have their points. The latest version is probably the better, IMO, but the Lee Marvin original is, well... original.

The thing I liked most about the original is Mama Cass singing the "Times will get better..." song. Unfortunately, they never did :-)

Funny you should post this just as I was watching this film for the 1st time (Tom Selleck version). A surprisingly good Western! I didn't know of the earlier one either. I'll have to get that one too. -Tutt

I found it at Wally World today in a two pack with Rio Lobo. I already had Selleck's version. Well worth getting the original too, thanks for starting the thread!

For me the bucking scene through the town was better in Lee Marvin's version. Of course, I grew up on Lee Marvin and am an opinionated old fanny burp!

Well, you MAY BE!!! But darn nice to see you here!!!!!! LOL So sorry I missed you in MO years ago. I tried, but was meant to spend my time with Grandma Tuttle instead in KS. Last time I saw her alive. But sure wish I could have met with you before you left the good ol' USA. That being said, you seem very happy where you are at. I could not wish better for you. I hope you will continue to occasionally post here Jim T. -Tutt

I just finished watching the "Selleck" version of this movie. I've been watching it in increments for a few days now.

This is one of the finest Westerns I have ever, ever seen. I'm going to recommend this to all my friends. I also think I'm going to change my signature line to a line from this film. It's that good.

Both Monte Walsh movies were excellent, and I agree with JimT that the bucking horse scene was better in the Lee Marvin version.

For a better perspective on Monte Walsh, get the book or an audiobook. The story is much longer and different in the book, starting with Monte as a very young lad, and ending in a very heroic...., well I'll not give it away. You really need to read it or at least listen to an audiobook!
