Finally, A Cast Load I Can Live With (405)

Post by CBinNH »

I have had poor luck shooting cast in the last couple years.
I imagine it is lack of patience & loading knowledge on my part,
but some was over-size &/or pitted bores. Anyway, I bought a
stainless Ruger #1 in 405 Win (I know, not a lever, but it is a
lever caliber). I'm trying some 325 GC cast bullets from Montana
Bullet Works. The left target is 29 grains of AA5744, The right is
30 grains. Range was 50 yards. 20 degrees at 10:00 AM this
morning. Snow is still 6-8"s deep. If spring ever comes to New Hampshire,
I'll back off to 100 yards & see if my eyes are any good using
30 grains again. Sorry no chronograph. I would guess they are
cruising along around 1500 yo 1600 fps. Chris

I think, technically speaking, it has a lever but has this odd manual repeat feature. Is that the NECG peep sight for the No. 1 I see mounted there?
... I love poetry, long walks on the beach, and poking dead things with a stick.

Looks like you've found you a good load, and thats good shooting also. I have only fired one 405 and that belongs to crs. I can see why TR liked it so much.

Rimfire, you are correct on the peepsight. I didn't want to scope the rifle at this point. My taste in scopes is kind of t-boney on a cube steak budget with a kid in college. I prefer it to the factory sights. I picked up a NECG white bead front sight too, but didn't realize it was bigger in diameter than the Ruger. I may end up putting it in the classifieds pay it forward section.

Nice shootin'! With cast bullets, everything is bullet fit to the groove diameter and throat. I'm guessing your velocities are closer to 1700------Sixgun

Looks like that 30 gr. load is a winner.

I've also got a No. 1 in 405. If I ever get time to shoot them I've got some 300 gr. cast bullets to try. What are yours sized?

Going by what my 95 said with just a touch less powder, you're 30 gr load is probably crowding 1750-1800.

Looks like that 30 gr load is a keeper :)

Ted H, the bullets are sized .412. Looks like I really should get a chronograph someday. It is hard for me to do when there is brass, bullets, etc. that I have room for in my reloading cabinet. Thanks for the input everyone. Chris
