Food for Thought (pun intended)

Post by AJMD429 »

Most of us on the forum probably consider ourselves fairly 'self-sufficient', and we are likely already survivors of things like blizzards, power-outages, floods, and so on.

THIS was the bread section at the huge Kroger 'Sav-On' store tonight, merely due to a snowstorm forecast for 24-48 hours from now...

Image

We ourselves may be 'self-sufficient', but with a nation where the majority of our neighbors strip the shelves this completely just a few hours after a mere snowstorm is predicted, we'd better stay prepared... :|

Violent rioting by the inner cities for a loaf of bread would be near instantaneous in the event of a real disaster. Sad so many are so unprepared. Might be wise to be very selective about who knows that you (we) are prepared.

Not counting the freezedried stuff, I have enough anaerobic raw grain (and the appropriate tools to process it) for about 6 months of "hearty bread" to supplement whatever I can kill & forage.

Some years back we had a fairly good sized earthquake. Now, my immediate area wasn't effected, other than that the kids got a few days off while the schools were inspected. But, the local markets looked like this within a couple of hours. Most folks panic even when it's not remotely possible they will be seriously effected by some sort of abnormal situation.

Of interest, the news also showed markets in the effected area that had lost power. The shelves were fully stocked. Why? Well without power, the registers wouldn't work. And since the clerks can't do simple math, and the inventory control is done by the same system, the stores wouldn't sell anything.

Oh to be sure, there were some smaller individually owned stores that did sell what they had, but in many cases the prices were wildly inflated. The governor ended up threatening them with prosecution for price gouging. Now seems to me that the smaller places were simply applying the old supply and demand principal of capitalism. He should have gone after the chain stores for not being willing to sell what they had just because it would have been inconvenient.

Around here you can add milk and bottled water to the list. None to be found. Wonder what would happen if the newest/latest gym shoes would be introduced on that day? There are idjets all around us.

A lot of those "unprepared" folks have no need to be prepared. The government takes care of all their needs; money, food stamps, phones, rent. And there are "programs" around from every church, and social organization for freebees. "What, me worry?"

Funny, the bread was picked clean but I'll bet there was plenty of flour. Doesn't anybody make biscuits any more?

A little flour, some crisco, and a little baking soda can sure be a good start to a delicious breakfast. I even keep some homemade jelly around.

The issue following ammo and components should be proof of our frailties, both individual as well as community. My wife and I both grew up on farms and were ahead of the boomers in age, but this whole concept of "prepping" is what we as country folk have as a lifestyle. Home canned goods, Home dried foods, Home frozen foods, flour sugar, yeast, gas stove, generator, AN. Not only storable, but quality and taste are better. Most of it costs less too. Anyone can do it, my wife occupies a corporate executive position, and Im a semiretired horse doctor(couple bad luck choices in health otherwise Id still go full-time). So, you don't have to be off the grid. Was that a rant?

Regarding "runs" on supermarkets. Riots/looting are the only "runs" I've seen on markets being from L.A., but I do have some thoughts on why.

There's a big difference between city folk and farm folk. Farm folk are pretty much "jack of all trades" while most city folk "specialize" in one or two areas (I was a lifelong machinist/mechanic, whereas my Dad, raised on a farm was a farmer, mechanic, veterinarian, carpenter, well digger, plumber, welder, etc., etc. ad infinatum). As far as food, the farmer goes out to the field and get a lot/most his food where a city feller must go to a central buying place for everything from eggs to beef.

Mind set is much different too. As 45 Colt mentioned, home food prep/storage on a farm is a lot more than a city feller's, whose choices/storage/prep. is determined by refrigerator or shelf space...

Jes my take being from the first generation off the farm, growing up in the city.

BTW, being from earthquake country, I usually keep 2 weeks worth of food and water (and ammo) handy.

Funny now even the most uninformed people turn into preppers when a "crisis" looms.

You'd think they'd be able to learn from this and stock up ahead of time, but no.

I am sure most here have some food and other supplies put up. It just makes sense.

And yes, in the event of a real crisis, look out. Things are going to get very nasty, very quickly. One of the reasons I reside in a low-population density area with everything I need to surthrive.
