+1.

You can fire the .45-70 in a .45-90, but not vice-versa.

If there are no markings on the barrel, are you even sure it is a .45?

I assume it has been rebarreled if it has no markings.

I have an 1899 vintage '95. It is a pretty cool rifle though mine was a basket case and is still in recovery mode.

It would be nice to see photos when you can. If you can't, I would be happy to post them for you, if you can email them to me.

I don't recommend shooting .45-70s in a .45-90 just because you can. 45-90 brass is cheap enough.

A buttplate could be tough.

For a forearm, Precision Gunstocks still has a few. Pretty inexpensive and I'm very impressed with the quality.

You are now approved as plowboy 45. Could change if someone over my level of technical acumen here changes that somehow.

Of the four square bolt Marlin 1895's I had two were from 1896 , one was from 1897 and the 33 WCF was 1912-1916 time period .

I had a 33 WCF , 38-56 , 40-65 and 40-82 . Kinda wish I had the 38-56 and 40-65 back now .

Never did get a square bolt in 45-70 or 45-90 .

Was the carrier the same for the two different 40s? I am thinking that they were. This has some bearing on what I am trying to figure out in my squarebolt Marlin which will become a .45-70 (currently a .33 CF). I'm guessing that the cartridge stop in these carriers are the same for both short and long cartridges in these rifles, but I don't know for sure.

To be honest I don't know !

I never took them apart and I've not owned any of the four in about 3 or 4 years .

I'm guessing they are identical simply because the ejector stop is what effectively determines the max OAL that the action can handle and the ejector does not vary between calibers so far as I know.

hmmm, is it an 1895 [ production of which started in 1895] or an 1881, which was being produced in 1886? either way it is a nice rifle. show us pics and give us the serial # range , if you will.

i once converted a 40/65 1895 [ i didnt do the rebore of course ] to 45/70 and all it needed was the rebore/rechamber and worked perfectly.

the 40-65 and 45-70 are the same length so that should work easily. The 45-70 to .45-90 though is an addition of 0.3" of brass. That might be a problem but the more I look at it, the less I think it matters. I'll be the only difference between the .45-70 and .45-90 is the chamber.

I'm not sure why I really care, but I guess, I'm just trying to figure these things out.

I hope Plowboy can get some photos up. I'm anxious to see his rifle.

If your photos are small enough, you can click on the "Choose file" button that is below the message reply box (below the bright blue line that says "Upload attachment"). Then page through your file folders to find the file and click on that and finally hit "open file" and it is added to your message like this.

That sounds like the hard way to get a magazine tube, but it might be the only way. I bought one of the very last of a special order, as my rifle needed one too. The modern "95" tube might be faked to work but I'm not sure it could be pulled off and there may unacceptable side effects if you did.

Looks like are making progress though. I'm hung up on getting around to polishing the action. That should be done really soon though. Then it will go very fast from there on out.

More pictures!

As far as the carriers for the old 1895 Marlins they are different according to caliber. I have all the calibers chambered in the 1895 Marlin & on occasion have them apart for internal cleaning. The carrier for the 45-70 & 45-90 is almost flat across while the 38-56 & 33 Win have more of a curve or cradle to hold the shell. Brent if you need measurements for the 1895 I can probably help you there. I have currently 10 inmy collection now
both pistol grips & straight grips.
