I guess they have some of the same smart-alecks we do on this forum. . . :D Seriously, though - that is a bad injury.

Just what was he thinking when he started to reach into the machine? Getting complacent around a machine is a good way for pain reinforced learning episodes to occur.

I imagine we have all done something as stupid at one point or another, but sometimes our stupidity catches up with us like this. I lost part of a finger and had to undergo two operations to get it back to being usable, and yes the accident that put me there was totally avoidable, just stupidity that caused it.

TedH, that is my point. Machines don't have feelings and the human body is not indestructible. What was the reloader thinking?

I'd guess something close to:

"That shell doesn't look like it's seated in the shell holder and it might not go into the sizing die straight, maybe if I can give it just a little push... Doh!"

My thoughts too...

Somehow I missed that thread... and someone beat me to the punch. A sizeable error on my part.

I was loading on my rock chucker about 35 years ago and got my finger caught between a case and the decapping die. I didn't push the case thru my finger but the decapping pin went thru my finger on one side and the case on the other side. I felt a crushing of my finger. I was a little sick after, went to the doctor to have it X-rayed. Doc said it was fine and would heel up just fine. In about a week I was loading ammo a little slower.

Pain reinforced learning might have consequences, but how many of us have made the same mistake twice when it caused an injury that required surgery to fix? I would prefer to learn from the mistakes that other people make.

That's why I use a single stage press,I figure my left hand can move out of the way of my right, and vise versa.

That probably wouldn't have happened with ANY manually operated press... but those motor-driven adaptations... simply have no feelings!
