SCAM ALERT

Post by jeepnik »

Wife got a call on her cell. Some fellow with a really bad Asian accent tried to tell us he was with "Windows Technical Support". Kicker is he said they weren't part of Microsoft, gave me a bogus Texas address, and wouldn't provide a phone number to call him back.

They wanted me to go to the "run" command box and access my system. All the while being very evasive. Eventually connected me with his "supervisor" who gave me the same run around.

Best part of this is, how did they get her cell number? It's never been provided to any company, much less a software company. I love my wife dearly, but she is lucky she can send an email, much less do anything else on a computer.

They sure try to sound official, and I'm sure there are some folks who will get scammed.

I had that same call recently. I asked him to tell me which computer it was. I asked if he meant the Commodore and he hung up on me.

Scams by phone? Once a week around here. I use the answering machine to handle all calls. If i do happen to be near the phone and it rings, I look at the caller ID and if it's anyone that's not someone I know close, I hit "talk" and hit "end", just so I don't have to listen to the phone ring.

No matter who calls, they are not calling to give you money, they are calling to get your money.

Already had two people who called and wanted to borrow my new log splitter. Both of these guys drive around in trucks that costs the same as I make in a year. I don't make up lies anymore. I just say"no, anything else?"----6

I was getting them for a while, from the guys over in India. I finally decided to start screwing with them by using old Simpsons's references, to "ApU" and "Squishees:", until they finally hung up. :D

Oh... you most certainly can... if you are the .gov.

It used to be called "black boxing".

Don't worry about how they got the number. In this area the cell numbers start 300 or 301. They just tell the computer to add the last four digits at random and wait for an answer.

Try reverse callback?
Here's a list of star codes for you; *69 being the most relevant-- http://www.yashy.com/star.codes.html
Or this fun one-- http://whocallsme.com/

Charges will probably apply with the callback codes, no guarantees they work with your provider.
Best of luck.

It won't work. They use something similar to a Magic Jack and log into a US "land line", from over seas.
