Two people with too much time on their hands...
1. The guy in this video. . . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuS3G7YK ... r_embedded
2. Me who was waiting for the coffee to brew and spent time watching it.
Kind of cool, though; reminds me of that German 'slingshot guy' with all the YouTube videos....

What does the steam do beside make smoke? The rest just looks like mechanics.

Gobblerforge, I have been thinking the same thing, if it was steam operated why use the crank???

Not steam at all....dry ice in water makes the effect......The barrel is electrically rotated, the crank works the firing mechanism....JerryB wrote:Gobblerforge, I have been thinking the same thing, if it was steam operated why use the crank???

What I find amazing is that there doesn't seem to be any 'pause' in the rotation of the copper tubes, which I assume are just being shot 'through' by a short-barreled 10/22 inside the case. If that is true, then there is some seriously accurate timing going on there - kind of reminds me of the way machine-guns supposedly shot 'through' the propellers of airplanes in the first world war (did they really...?).

Yea they really did. The firing mechanism was a geared drive from the prop, that would not go out of time, unless a gear broke or was shot I suppose. I remember reading that the gun fired as the prop passed in front of the barrel, that way the bullet exited between the blades. I'm sure it was a pretty simple formula for the math guys, with the variables of RPM, distance between blades, and MV known.
I wonder if they built any that were slightly "off" in the gear ratios? Not funny for the pilot I guess.
