the old oater westerns ......
I like these old movies. I grew up in Simi Valley, CA where lots of these were made at Corriganville and the Iverson Movie Ranch. And the movie location at Lone Pine: Alabama Hills, I've spent lots of time around there in the Mt Whitney area. Lots of familiar scenery.
here's a John Wayne from 1934 .....

.
You need to subscribe the GUNS OF THE OLD WEST magazine, as most issues have an article (or two) about the old oater-western stars.

You know, I drive past it regularly, but never stop to look. I know it's going to be there for a while so I don't bother. Bad idea, the rock maybe, but I may not. Gonna stop next time.

drove past the Lone Ranger rock this afternoon, it's still there.
and just for fun, here's a 1949 panorama looking south & panning east across the San Fernando Valley ..... at the bottom of the screen is the Iverson Movie Ranch, and that's where the Lone Ranger rock is located. I keep looking at it, but I think the rock is just out of sight below the bottom edge.

Singing Sandy had to be pretty good with a gun with a voice like that....
I remember Gabby saying he could listen to him sing all night, that really cracked me up..

If that's true, can you imagine just how bad Wayne's singing was?Buck Elliott wrote:That wasn't Duke's voice we heard.. Duke was notorious for his lousy singing..
If you wanta hear how he sounded later in life, catch him and Lee Marvin belting out 'Little Redwing" in The Comancheros...
