38-55 & venison

Post by JerryB »

This morning I got a nice big doe with the Jes rebored 1973 WINCHESTER 94. Using the load Kirk told me that worked for him, 18 grains of 5744 and a 255 grain cast from Montana Bullet. The doe was about 50 yards broadside to me, I aimed just behind the right shoulder fired and she ran about 125 yards and piled up. dragged it to the house, got it hung and it started raining, skinned, quartered it and cleaned the mess and it still rained all day. That doe had a heavy layer of acorn fat that I have not seen in a few years.

Good job Jerry. I got My 38-55 back from JES but haven't had time to mess with it.

86er, I really enjoy this carbine. How would it compare to your 35-30 loaded up to around 1800fps?? This load of Kirk's is around the old load of 1300fps, he told me 19 grains would run 1400fps. For deer here in Arkansas the 18 grains of 5744 is plenty, but I may go to a little softer cast bullet.

Buffalo Bore pushes a 255 well over 2200 fps....is that safe to do?

Blaine, the 30-30 in that rifle runs up there with some factory loads in the same rifle. If I was taking this rifle to Alaska or Africa the BB loads might be nice to have.

In MY experience it is doable with certain powders. Tim is pretty careful and gives velocities from real guns. Some guns are faster than others. I find that 2000-2100 fps is just fine for a 255 gr. and about all I want out of my Contender. Beats a .35 Rem just a bit.
Sincerely,

Hobie

Does your barrel guy rebore the original barrel, or does he make a new barrel altogether?

What vintage is your 94 Winchester?

And finally, what does he charge for a job like this?

Thanks!

You can send your barrel to him but it is much better to send your rifle. He will test fire it for you and you don't have to worry about headspace or other problems. I think he still get $225 for the work. The carbine belongs to my son and since he looking at the fourth surgery on his right shoulder it is mostly mine, he has shot it left handed with some light loads. The gun is a 1973 Winchester 94 carbine. I have a few old 94 30-30's, but I sure do like the 38-55 round.
Just type in JES Reboreing and you should find him. It really is a nice round to load light or regular or heavy. Factory ammo from Black Hills shoots good to I have not tried the Buffalo Bore stuff.
