7.62 precision

Post by Mescalero »

In the gun remake and reloading advice thread, you wrote " there are chemical solutions for blackening
stainless"
Could you elaborate?
My Star .380 is stainless ( helps with summer carry in Phoenix ) if you are outside in summer in Phoenix; you are going to sweat.
I have never really liked the guns stainless look, if it could get dark; I would much prefer that.

It is something I need to look into. I have seen solutions advertised, and read only a little about them, that chemically blacken stainless.

I have been planning to really look into it when I get a chance. I like a coating over stainless in many cases. A black Duracoat done right (right technique) can look really good. I coated a Sako rifle once that was a one-off custom from the factory rifle built by Sako for a guy who was responsible for the purchase of the largest percentage of Sakos sold in the US.

I had it standing in a rack and after I coated it and it caught a customer's eye, who asked about it. I told him the story behind the rifle, and he said, "I new it had to be some kind of special custom rifle, because the finish on the metal is the nicest I have ever seen!"

On the other hand, I don't care for a coating on a really traditional rifle, like a Winchester lever gun, or pre-336 Marlin.

So I have always thought that in the case of a Rossi 92, for example, it would be great to be able to combine the advantages of stainless with a black finish that was not a coating.

So now I have more incentive to look into this type of finish and see if it is a feasibility for stainless firearms.

On the other hand, for the star .380, a coating like DuraCoat would work well, look good, and you can do it yourself at little cost.

Para Ordnance uses THIS finish - http://www.ionbondguncoatings.com/ on their 1911's - http://para-usa.com/2013/firearms/tacti ... ps1445.php

Bighorn Armory uses some sort of hard dark finish on their stainless guns, I believe, as well.

Leverdud,
Have you, or someone you know actually used it?

7.62,
The flats on the side of the slide have been polished to shiney.
How to dull them?

Yes, I've used it. It works particularly well on Garand gas cylinders, and I've tried it on some stainless hardware that I wanted blackened.

The flats of the slide could be dulled with a scotch green pad, which I use on brushed stainless guns to to remove scratches with good effect, or by flat sanding with 400 wet/dry paper. If the blackener works on your stainless, roughing the surface a bit with a green pad will help it to take better.
