7-30 Waters to .25-35?

I just got 100 7-30 Waters cases for a very small price in a yard sale (Who knew??). While I have great respect for Ken Waters, I don't have a 7-30, but I do have several .25-35s, and it LOOKS to me like a 7-30 case would be more easily re-formed into .25-35 than the .30-30s I've used in the past.

Anybody tried this? Results? Problems?

They would work great for 25-35 AI. The shoulder is farther forward than 30-30 so I would think it would have more brass to move than a 30-30 cartridge. Won't know without trying .

I shoot and reload the 7-30 in my Contender pistol. It is a super cartridge in a Contender. I'd buy that brass off of you if you're trying to decide what to do with it.

It didn't work well for me. Anneal, get the lube just so and then be disappointed. Bought .25-35 brass and was done with that problem. .30-30 worked better.

Yea, beside of all of the above, you might run into large case webs. I have yet to be able to run a 30-30 case into a 25-35 fls and get it to work in a half dozen 25-35's I've played with. I've always needed to size them down with a .219 Zipper case former.

thanks for the address, Paul--I'll hang onto it. But I traded the 7-30s for some factory-loaded and some once-fired .25-35s at my gun club's swapmeet. Problem solved.

I think you need special RCBS forming dies to make .30-30s into .25-35s efficiently. And then you have some trimming and reaming, and maybe fire-forming to do. Worth it if you can't get .25-35 brass any other way; this "obsolete" cartridge has come into its own with modern bullets and powders (I use it only in 2 single shots and a Savage 99, so have a wide choice of bullets. That helps.).
