Spam's pretty good. Down here we get a national variety that's similar. I like to slice it thin and toss on fresh bread with a bit of mayonnaise and a touch of mustard. Never tried it fried.BlaineG wrote:I love spam. Sliced thin and fried brown, it just don't get much better than that for sammichs, eggs, mac and cheese, or main meat......mmmmm, Spam!

Of course. Nothing rolls around in a rucksack with a box of .30-30 ammo like that little blue can.
Although I haven't got around to trying them, yet, they now offer some versions that appear to be healthier than the original. May be worth a taste. Conversely, they now offer one with added bacon!
They have a great website, too.

Ya mean "Ol' Snot Peppers"? They are OK if cooked long enough. If the slime impeded their progress down to the gut, they can cause a wicked yacking action.Rimfire McNutjob wrote:I suppose we'll have to count you out for Okra as well.jengel wrote:SPAM. Simply put, Spam is the best thing they ever canned. It lasts for years, if the can don't get wet. It's loaded with protein and fats, both of which you need. Makes an ideal addtion to the emergency supplies. I'll be those that don't like it would sure eat it up if they were hungry.

SPAM is good stuff. Made from select quality pork shoulders.
I like SPAM. My wife makes a terrific yakisoba.
I also like SOS.
I also used to like the Ham and Eggs that came in C-Rats.

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

They claim it's pork shoulders, but looking at it I have always wondered what percentage of tongues, bungs, and lungs is in there too? Maybe a little sweepings off the meat cutting room floor?
To hell with them fellas, buzzards gotta eat same as the worms.

I used to eat it as a kid, then layed off for many years until I was stationed in Japan. The Japanese were given SPAM after the War due to food shortages and my Obasan remembers it as the only meat they ate for awhile and on Okinawa it is still kind of a staple meat. I eat it somewhat regularly again now.

Why do Hawaiians take so kindly to SPAM? I would have thought with all that seafood around there, spam would be used as chum.GANJIRO wrote:SPAM the "national" food of Hawaii Hawaiians consuming 40% of all SPAM produced. SPAM Musubi is da bes' broke yo' mout' meal in one hand there is!

You can thank WWII for that with everything being rationed SPAM was the only readily available meat protein during that time. Hawaiians have always loved pork (Kalua Pork, and Laulau dominant features in Hawaiian menus), and salt is the predominant spice in native cuisine so SPAM was an instant hit. Very convenient too.deerwhacker444 wrote: Why do Hawaiians take so kindly to SPAM? I would have thought with all that seafood around there, spam would be used as chum.

Hawaiians love our fish too but to have a decent LU'AU you have to have both fish (preferably fresh and raw), and Kalua (ka-lua meaning the-pit or underground pit roasted) Pig.

For many years now Austin Tx has held the ultimate Spam party know as Spam O Rama. Lots of different recipes to sample and plenty of ice cold barley pop.
