The passing of my Father

Post by Old Time Hunter »

Well, it finally happened. At 0941 on August 20th I lost my Father.

In what some might see as a blessing based on all he has been through these past four-five years, my heart aches at the loss due to the re-connection I have felt with him in the last ten-fifteen years.

I have to thank God for giving us that opportunity.

A couple of years ago he gave me his 1939 era .32 Special '94 Winchester, that is in pristine condition, that was given to him by his uncle in 1945. My great uncle had come back from the war and had a job with a large paper company as a "land warden" which issued him a personal model 99 Savage, so he gave the Winchester to my Dad. Since his uncle ordered his Winchester at the end of '39 and Winchester was too busy building war material for Britain (lend-lease) his Winchester was not delivered until 1941 while he was in boot camp. My Dad used that rifle for deer hunting starting in 1945 and last carried it November of 2010.

My Father was fortunate to live a good life, always finding the best in everyone and always standing by the code of, " if you do not have anything good to say, do not say anything". He always gave you the benefit of the doubt too.

When my Mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's a few years ago, he stood steadfastly by her. Still making her smile on a daily basis. His devotion to her is evident in his wishes as he passed, he does not want a formal funeral, but a celebration of life for both of them on or around what would be their 63rd wedding aniversary this coming December.

It is really tough not being able to pick up the phone and give him a call...Dad, rest in peace.

Grieve well friend. I remember those feelings well. The feeling of my heart exploding is no longer there but the memory of the sense of loss is part of me now. My thoughts are with you.
Kind regards,

As you are already seeing, he IS still around in many ways, just not his physical self. You will still share good times with him and still seek his counsel in bad times, just on a different level. He's been promoted to a position a few floors up but he's still around.

Unfortunately, I had to deal with that when I hadn't yet seen my fifth birthday, so just be thankful you had all those decades of time to grow more mature and strong to deal with it, and to have more time with 'the old man'. Now I'm older than mine ever lived to be, so I wonder sometimes if we could somehow meet, which of us would be giving the 'sage wisdom' to the other... I don't feel very wise, so hopefully he continued to learn in the here-after, because I still rely on 'his' advice and wisdom now and again... :|

Sorry for your loss. Take comfort in the fact that you had a good relationship and that he left you something that means so much to you.

My condolences on your Fathers passing.

For about six-months after my father passed, whenever something happened that I thought he'd like to hear about, I'd find myself picking up the phone to call him to tell him about it. So, if that happens to you, think nothing of it - it's natural.

Deepest sympathies and condolences on your loss. We did the same for my parents after their passing celebrating their life on their 58th anniversary date. Neither wanted a morbid and sad funeral so just us siblings, mates, and grandkids scattering their ashes in Kailua Bay then recalled all the great times we had growing up with great parents. Still miss them 6 years later. Take all the time you need to mourn their passing.
