Finally, finished (well I need to polish the chamber, but that is tuning, not building ^_^)

What an experience. There were several times, I was sure this would be another failed project, like the VW Squareback, and the Time Machine, but this one I finished. Three or four months, I think and definitely more than $1300 total, including parts, supplies, etc. Not a bargain, but its done, and I love it. I'll let the blueing cure for a week, then fire it next weekend to find the sweetest load, then in two weeks its off to the club for a match!

Jack,
The rust blue job looks great. I think you got it down pat!

Yea, you want to be easy on the finish for at least a week and then be careful on the type of oil you use on it for several months. Remember, Hoppe's #9 will eat that finish right off, so if you shoot it, keep the solvent where it belongs............in the barrel.--------------6

The "Lemonton" saga has been a classic. I'm going to miss those updates of the lemonton, but I'm glad you are finally going to get to use it to make big holes in some things.

Haha! For a minute I almost wet myself. You followed up the oil warning with the solvent warning, and i am curing the finish with Hoppes oil. It took a minute to realize you were talking about the solvent!

This rifle is BP only, so there will be a minimum of No. 9 anyway.

Rollers look better to me than the Sharps rifles do... Must be the reason they were made so much longer

Again, thanks.

I miscounted and the match is this coming weekend. So I snuck off to the range with it to test out some loads. It was strange, though, the more powerful the load, the lower the ball hit at 50 yards.

Anyway, I think I will try 50 grain/volume of 777 FFFG, with cream of wheat, compress under a 500 grain bullet, COL 2.83.

Even with just 50 grains of BP and that heavy barrel, this sucker kicks. I kept hitting my glasses on the eye cup. I am a bit of a stock crawler, though. I need to maybe sit up straighter and keep my head further back.

It cleans out beautifully, too. Three swipes with a water soaked patch and the bore was clean. No lead, no nothing. The sights are dead on vertically, too. I am very exited to shoot it next week. I wont have time to get a smokeless load worked up for the 7mm Roller, so I'll shoot a light smokeless load from the Trapdoor. That gun seems to really like shooting the big 500 grain bullet over 22.2 grains of SR 4759.

Once new thing I am now doing for loading, is I bought the .459 neck expander from Track of the Wolf. It really makes seating the bullet smoother. I think I was deforming the bullets or case before, trying to squeeze a .459 bullet down into a .457 neck. Now, the slide in smooth and I do a soft taper crimp to hold them in.

I am pumped, I am sure you can tell....

Its just a monthly club shoot at the Dalton Gang club in Dalton New Hampshire. I started shooting there last year, and a nice old geezer named Oakwood Dick (he swears he wasn't bragging) took me under his wing and showed me the ropes.

Dick passed away this past winter and I honestly havent enjoyed going there as much, so I haven't been much this year. So, this shoot will be to celebrate his memory for me, and then I think I'll head the other way and see what upstate New York has to offer for sillouetted shooting and such.

I have high hopes. During testing, the bullet holes were all on a vertical strip of electrical tape at 50 yards. My only problem is I keep banging my glasses on the rear tang sight from the recoil. If I don't remember to set it back into position, or to hold my head further back, i keep shooting low.

Maybe you can shim that little spring so it won't move around so much.....When I get the tang for the Sharps, I want to get an eyepiece that has the rubber ring attached....You'll Poke Your Eye Out

I think the solution in the long term will be a longer butt stock with a high comb and a raised cheek rest... next year.
