Picked up an LC Smith 10 gauge today !
Gun was made in 1890 and is steel twist . Thirty inch barrels modified and modified . Overall it needs a good cleaning , but all in all I think it's a shooter !

Is "Twist Steel" the same as Damascus? Is this a black powder only gun? And, let us know about recoil. Even though the thing looks plenty heavy, I've got to wonder about the old equal and opposite reaction thing.

Twist steel and damascus are similar .
If I deem them safe to shoot I DO NOT shoot black in them . I use a SR7625 load in my W&C Scott which IS damascus .
Recoil is negligible in my W&C so I see no reason it would be any worse in this . My regular load is 1 1/4 ounce of shot at a speed of about 1050-1100 FPS .
Now all I need is a nice Parker hammerless damascus 10 gauge and I'll have all (actually more) then I need !

Those old Elsies are a work of art. IMO, the double guns from the 1890-1920 period had the finest of all craftsmanship, exceeding any levergun or single shot.
Speaking of W & C Scott guns, my bud just got one in. That too is a work of art. It has the oak leaf engraving and IIRC, hammers.......12ga.--------------6

I have three W&C's !
The 10 gauge was my maternal grnadfathers and it came from one of the DuPont's of gunpowder fame !
The other two are a 12 and 20 although there was a 16 that went with them and was sold before we got them . They belonged to a Peter's of Peters Cartridge fame !
The 10 and 20 are actually back action locks while the 12 is a sidelock .
I always thought it was kinda neat that these W&C's had little glass windows so you could see if the gun was cocked rather then cocking indicators poking up on the top of the action !

My Grandfather and grandmother lived in Fulton, NY where the Hunter Arms Company (L.C. Smith shotguns) was located. There was two gentlemen, I think named Crouse, who lived next door, both were engravers for L.C. Smith. As a kid I remember seeing many fine examples of their engraving. My Aunt has a .410 Field-grade shotgun that these guys engraved for her when she turned 16 (late 40's), I've seen that gun twice, not sure what happened to it after her passing... :)

Good choking IMO too!

It would be better if it were a Parker
But the guy I got this from has some other doubles I think he's going to part with . All Fox , Smith and dare I say it Parker !
So if he has a Parker hammerless 10 gauge I might know it's new home

I wondered about that

Now thinking on that a bit I might try #1 Buck in this one instead of the 00 load !

Earlier tonight I loaded two rounds of 00 Buck with 12 pellets , two rounds of #1 Buck with 16 pellets and finally two rounds of #3 buck with 28 pellets !
Hopefully if I can rise at 7AM I'll give them a go in the LC tommorrow !

00 from the left and #1 from the right looks like a good combo. If that #1 load is consistent with the vertical pattern it will be amazing. You have abt eight .30 musket balls between the spine and heart. amazing.

I never liked to pattern my skeet or trap guns years ago . I might have shot a paper occasionally for point of impact , but as far as counting quadrents etc I never was intrested . However since starting to mess with the buckshot I kinda do like patterns but then there's never more then 30 or so pellets in a pattern .
