Ruger 357 Blackhawk Issue

Post by stretch »

Hello ladies and gents!

I have a coworker who has a a Ruger Blackhawk in 357 magnum.

He likes it well enough but it has a problem. 4 chambers shoot to point
of aim and group acceptably. 2 of the chambers shoot noticeably and
consistently several inches to to the left. Obviously there's a problem
with the cylinder; either the timing or those two chambers.

What are your ideas on approaching this problem? I have no fancy pin
gauges. Order a new cylinder from Ruger? Anyone know a good
revolver 'smith in Maine, NH, or Vermont?

I WOULD SHIP IT DIRECTLY TO STURM RUGER & COMPANY AND LET 'EM FIX. THIS IS USUALLY CAUSED BY THOSE TWO CHARGE HOLES BEING OUTTA SINC SO TO SPEAK. HE SHOULD SEND A TARGET OR TWO ALONG TO DEMONSTRATE WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT. THE CHARGE HOLS CAUSING THE PROBLEMS SHOULD BE MARKED AFTER THE TEST FIRINGS.
THE BEST PISTOLSMITH IN NEW HAMPSHIRE IS THE STURM RUGER & COMPANY PLANT AT NEWPORT. TAKE IT THERE.
IT IS POSSIBLE IT IS UNFIXABLE.
IT IS STILL POSSIBLE IT IS THE OWNER.
IT IS ALSO POSSIBLE THAT THESE TWO CHARGE HOLES ARE THE GOOD ONES AND THE OTHER FOUR ARE THE BAD ONES !!!!
RIDE, SHOOT STRAIGHT, AND SPEAK THE TRUTH

If something is really wrong with the gun wouldn't it be shaving lead?

I had one like that about twenty years ago. I marked the cylinder and sent it to them. They replaced it with a new cylinder that shot very, very well. Quick turn around time also. Easiest fix to this problem.

Ruger will take care of you provided you write a polite letter to go with the gun and give enough information to describe the issue. You will be pleased I am sure.

Yep - Be sure to mark or tag the errant chambers before shipping the gun off.

(Ruger will most likely require the gun, less grip panels, for timing, etc - it's legal under Federal Law for you to send/receive it direct w/o an FFL)

Too embellish what Terry said: Shoot the groups with fresh standard FACTORY AMMO ONLY at a standard distance such as 25 yds. Notate the brand, weight, bullet type, lot number and distance on the test target.
Ruger does not acknowledge hand loads. So don't bother using them. By using fresh factory ammo you eliminate all ammo variables that hand loads will bring up.

Hey - thanks for that tip, Joe!

Hadn't thought of the ammo that way from Ruger's point-of-view, but
it does, of course, make some sense.
All I have at the moment is hand loads, and while I'm quite certain that
they outperform factory loads in terms of accuracy, the folks at the factory
might be harder to convince.

This is what I love about this forum - there's always some little kernel of
truth that I didn't know about before.

Nothing to add, but thanks for the info. I know someone who can use this information.
