Noon Cannon
Supposedly these were used to let people know it was noon.
Made this one yesterday but have since made a better arm that holds the magnifying glass.

Re: Noon Cannon
I need to play with that idea some. We were doing a little anvil shooting last night. Always a crowd pleaser.

Re: Noon Cannon
Be careful Pitchy! I knew a guy that shot his cannon at a hill side but missed it with to
much elevation, well the beer can filled with concrete went sailing merrily along until
it came to a fairly sudden stop in the neighbors 60FT silo

Re: Noon Cannon
I don't think that cannon is big enough to shoot a beer can sized projectile. It looks more like about a .25 or smaller. I am not going to stand right in front of it.

Re: Noon Cannon
Even with something that small, I am not going to get in the habit of standing in front of it. It is a very cool Idea. I like the way the magnifying glass is used to set off the powder. I never got that advanced with a magnifying glass. I don't think I got beyond ants.

Bill after i thought about it and looked that hole your looking at is just the pocket for the powder, it doesn`t go through. The flash hole itself is only 1/16thBill in Oregon wrote:Pitch, it looks like your touchhole is a touch on the large size. I ought to try that with my golf ball mortar ...

Re: Noon Cannon
Were these type of things ever really used? The thing I'm wondering about is that as the year progresses, the angle of light changes and would be soon missing the powder. I could see a line of powder or a line of fuse so that the point of light only has to cross somewhere. I make and sell sundials on occasion and I love the idea. Here's the one I built on the south face of the garage some years ago. It's 40' on that side so my sundial is about 40 feet by 12 feet. I don't have the picture dated but I read it as about 3 in the afternoon around the first of April. Sundials can be used as calenders too.

Pretty cool Gobbler.
Yes they date back a was and yep they had a trough as a touch hole but also the bracket that holds the glass has to be adjustable to compensate for the movement of the sun with the seasons.

Re: Noon Cannon
Pitchy, that little cannon is the coolest! What caliber did you make it? I would think that putting a rubber ball in there would be too cool.

Re: Noon Cannon
Awesome Pitchy but I missed out on your first two videos as I was out of the house this past weekend but that last little guy is pretty neat. Make a nice firing deck ornament. I love cannons. I still have a cast iron carbide cannon my dad gifted close to 20 years ago. She's as loud as a 12 gauge, and almost as fun.
