The objects on the running boards are boards hooked together to lay down, as a mat to provide traction, when the car gets stuck in the mud. Some years back an outfit was selling a modern version of it.

Not a new idea, as 'fascines' they've been in use by infantry for centuries to fill in ditches or moats to cross, basically large bundles of branches tied together for guys to run/scamper across. Same, just bigger and heavier, on WW1 tanks to cross the large ditches (some of which were 10-20 feet deep and 10 feet across) so they wouldn't nose down and stick.

In WW2 the SAS, LRDG and other waaaaaaay out in the middle of nowhere in the African desert groups used lengths of pierced steel planking from the 'instant runways' (which used the same concept, just for an entire runway) to make 'sand channels' for the exact same purpose, getting trucks unstuck from soft spots.

They're still used in modern offroading at times.
