Most of the Salesmen I have seen at Gander Mountian should be on a CAR lot in the blizzard that is going on in ohio right now.
last year a local gander had a standard pre-64 Win 94 30-30 on the used rack,had been hunted alot. A big "pre 64" $1,300 tag was on it. I said that I had a model 64 that was worth about $10,000. All I got was this .A what???

Big 5 sporting goods does the same thing. They're all zip tied.

Last year I was in a big chain sporting goods store. I asked the kid behind the counter to let me look at a BLR. The only ones they had were short mags and 308's. I asked him if they had any in 358 Win. This really put him in a tail spin so he went and asked an older guy who was apparently the manager. This guy comes over and tells me they didn't make such an animal and it must be a new and experimental cartrige! As I handed the rifle back I told him it was new and experimental...back in 1955!
We had some words there. He was arrogant and told me that I didn't know what I was talking about, he was an expert! We finally cracked open a reloading manual and read the write up on the cartrige to settle it. When all was said and done all of the stuff in my cart got put back on the shelf and I'll drive to another smaller store to buy what I need.

I dont expect the employees to know more than I do, especially at big dept type stores. But I expect I can check a gun for function before I buy it.

its nice when one knows his stuff but they really cant know everything. It bothers me more when theyre willing to argue about their misconceptions.

I had a few words with a guy I generally respect a couple years ago. He works at a local smaller gun store & if your talking bolt actions he knows his stuff. Its what interests him.
I bought my Rossi from them & he hapenned to be there when I picked it up.
I bought some American eagle 357 158 gr sp's while I was there & he insisted on cautioning me about useing them in a Winchester replica. At first I thought he was joking but we parted a little hot with one another. Him because I wouldn't budge & me because I knew I was right. I was dissapointed more than anything else because I know him to be generally rational & knowledgeable.
As it turned out he looked into it & next time I saw him he had a 454 on the way. He apologized & life went on.

It's not a heck of a deal. It's $50.00 more than a new Marlin 336. It has a "hardwood" stock.

I'd rather have a used Marlin or Winchester.

They zip lock the lever at Big5 for the display models and they won't let you try the action.

I've learned that by saying you don't like this display model because it has a mark or scratch you can ask to see one from the back...they go to the back and bring out a box with a gun that hasn't been zip-locked.

I won't buy a rifle that I can't at least try the action.

You can thank the morons who go on mass shootings and the lawyers who look at businesses as their own personal checkbooks for the trigger-lock/zip-tie garbage.

Won't be long until Dick's, Gander Mountain, Cabelas, Bass Pro and others drop these lines altogether. A new Wally-World just opened up a couple miles from my house this past Friday. I went in to see if they had a full sporting goods department. Sadly, they did not - no guns, a little ammo, not much else. I was looking at the ammo section and a lady came up and asked me if I needed help. I said I was looking for .25-20 WCF ammo (I know - a real long shot). She grabbed a box of .25-06 and asked if they'd do!

Our walmart still has ammo & BB guns but thats it. The ammo is cheap tho, I didn't feel like looking for a service person today but they had Remington 550 bulk packs for 9.99, Federals were 12.99 & Winchester 11.99. The Winchesters only had 500 tho.
I went in looking for a simple cammo web sling & they didn't have one. Bought some cleaners & a cheap scope for the boys 22. They did have a bunch of American made Buck knives.

Many of the Walmarts down here have a nice selection of guns and accesories. If the store was selling enough guns to make a profit on them, then they still are.

Quite contaire keemosabe! Our "super store" Walmart was the largest gun dealer in the state...moved the third most firearms of all Walmarts nation wide. They still got rid of all the firearms, the store manager is vehmently anti gun and she says her regional manager feels the same so when corporate gave them the option, they jumped on the opportunity to get rid of them. Last year they sold the most hunting/fishing licenses of ANY retail establishment in the state, the GM of the store has stated repeatedly that she would like to get rid of that "tastless moniker", her words not mine. Good thing there is a Sportsman's Warehouse less than 20 miles away, they let you fondle the merchandise!
