My "New" Hunting Rifle: Model 88

I already have some Win. 748, and some Nosler Partition 140s.....I'll find a sweet spot with them. Those should be plenty for any deer, elk, or black bear around here. Nice 88 Blaine. Looks to be a post 1964 with the newer style checkering and type III or IV mag. I hope you're as happy with it as I am with mine. I agree that "Minute of Pop Can @ 250 yds" is a great benchmark. I much prefer shooting at things rather than at paper. I'm found of "Minute of Bowling Pin @ 300 yds" with mine but then I've got a higher power scope on my .308 at 3-9x40. That said, I was able to 'kill' a bowling pin at 300 yds using only iron sights on my M1A too. Makes me smile!!

I'll range a rampaging white rock to about 100yd, shoot at it, and adjust accordingly. Around here, it's hard to find that much open space. I hate going to ranges.COSteve wrote:Nice 88 Blaine. Mine is a 1959 version model 88 in 308 with open sites and it has killed a elk or three, yours is a nice rifle you will be happy with it.

With that sweet looking baby, you could sell it and buy TWO .308 Model 88's. Personally, I'd stick with the .284 as it and the 308 are mighty close. Besides, you are in your own world there.....308's are a half dollar a dozen where the 284 is a Double Eagle.

My rem308 and it's 110grn load ain't to tight a group on paper, 2" at 100, it is easy to get all OCD about it but what the heck. Still gets the job done as far as I want to shoot so,,,,,

The 88's are tack drivers but are a delicate rifle.
I had a near new pre-64 in .308, 5 shot ragged grups at 100 yds but a
minor fall snapped the stock and broke the scope. Really thin wood at the wrist.

I have two 88s in 308 and like them very much. They are stocked for offhand and field shooting and kick harder than necessary from the bench.

You can probably use 7.5x55 Swiss cases in a pinch.
