I have another question, on some of these repo guns it`s been stated that you may not have to thin the 45-70 cases to work.
I was thinking about loading up a few rounds as the gun won`t be here until next week. Question will a 45-70 case that i thin the rim on shoot ok in a gun that a un thinned case will fit in or will there be a head space problem.

Pitchy wrote:As not to take this topic about loads over to cas and away from here i`d like to continue the discussion about different loads. I see over there some are using the 405 grain bullet with no problems.
My Lee 405 grain flat nose mold drops bullets at 392 grains using wheel weights and a little lynotype.
I may try this bullet starting with a charge of 32.0 grains of 3031 which should be mild.
If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions please chime in.
A 300 grain bullet was the standard for the 1876. With the advent of the new (stronger) repros, folks have experimented with the heavier bullets, and, at least in terms of the Uberti rifles, have had good success with the 405. Uberti uses the same barrel (bore/twist rate) on their 45 caliber 76s as they do on their 45-70 arms. I am not sure about the twist on the Chappy.

As to the rim question; That depends on how close the rifle has been set up, and how much you have thinned the rims on your cases. I think I would wait to you have the rifle in hand and see where you are.

Pitchy, PM sent. Regarding your rim thickness if the new '76 will take a 45-70 rim ........ you can tell by the last bit of lever closure. Too thick a rim and you will have to put a lot of pressure on that lever to close it (which will not be good for your action at all ....... something will stretch or give). To thin a rim and the lever will close with barely any pressure at all. That is not necessarily a problem unless the result is excessive head space, in which case you might notice your primers backing out a wee bit. It might be better to wait until your '76 arrives and then try out your rim thickness.

Boys i tell ya i`m real impressed with this rifle, fit and finish is perfect, the wood is walnut with a dark satan finish.
After messing around trimming a handfull of 45-70 cases to work i shot it a few times at 30 yards, last shot was dead center in a two inch circle.
I`ll post a better range report in a day or two.
Had to thin the rims two .62 to work in this gun, might be a guy that has some factory ammo for it, going to check on that.

Wooeee! That is one beautiful rifle. By the way, it is a 'satin' finish, not 'Satan' finish. A satan finish would be one wicked gun for sure! :D

Having a little trouble with loading, i`m using a 292 grain bullet, lyman mold number 457191 and crimping in top groove.
I trimmed the case to 1.81 but that makes the overall length to long.
I`m going to have to trim the cases to 1.75 to make the OAL right at 2.25.
Will shortening the case that much raise pressures too much?
The loads i shot today were 35 grains of 3031.

Nice rifle Pitchy. Way better than what I have heard about the Chaparral, so that's a good thing. I responded to your PM, but for the sake of those following this thread I will repeat it here. My .45-60 is Uberti made and does require thinning of the rims. I am using the Lyman 457191 exactly the same as the ones I sent you. My brass is trimmed short at 1.81" and the bullet seated at the top of the last grease groove giving an overall length of 2.27". These cycle through my rifle easily.

As best I can measure with my dial caliper, the bullet measures .450" from nose to top of first grease groove. With brass trimmed at 1.81" ,adding .450" makes 2.26" overall loaded length, so my above mentioned 2.27" may represent slight stretching of the brass after several loadings, but still OK in my gun. I'm not sure why the additional .060" needs to be trimmed to fit your rifle. Velocity testing over a chronograph, as well as careful study of fired cases would help determine any pressure problems. I've not tried 3031 powder, but Reloader 7 and IMR 4198 both work well in my rifle.

Not much for sight adjustment on the 76 is there for 100 yards and under, mine shoots about dead on at 50 but i`m sure its going to be low at 100.
Took a couple shots at my 100 gong and missed  but i`m going to put a big target up and shoot from a good rest.
Thoughts?

Pitchy,

Get yourself one of the newer style Marble's Improved tang sights that you can change the stems on.

http://www.buffaloarms.com/Detail.aspx? ... 1&CAT=4093

I'd try the midrange stem:

http://www.buffaloarms.com/Detail.aspx? ... 7&CAT=4093

The 1876 .45-60 is not a flat shooting round, so plenty of sight elevation is needed to reach out past 100 yards. I had good success with the Marble's, and even better with an MVA vernier tang, but that MVA is spendy at near $300.

No drilling? OK, this is the next best alternative:

http://www.buffaloarms.com/Detail.aspx? ... 4&CAT=4077

Either way, a taller rear sight is the answer.

That`s the sight that came on the rifle :)
But there`s quite a jump between the buckhorn and the lowest setting on the ladder.

yes, but you need a longer rear stock screw to accomadate the tang sight base; tang sights work best for my eyes and sure look good on the 76.

I have a couple of the venier sights for my sharps but i like the ladder sight on this gun. It`s far enough ahead that i can focus on it clearly so i`ll see how i shoot with it.

So pitchy, which rifle is that one? 22, 26 or the 28" one. And did they say what the rate of twist is? It sure looks good, to good.

Question for the rest is which caliber would you chose and why if you were to buy one of these 1876 Chaparral Arms 600 dollar guns fron CDNN. The 40-60, 45-60, 45-75, or the 50-95.

Think the 28" barrel is worth considering? But they don't list it in either the 40-60 or the 50-95.

Thanks

This is the 28 inch one in 45-60, the easiest cal. to reload for as far as getting brass.
Better call CDNN first to see what they have, when my dealer ordered mine they said that was all they had in the 28 inch version in 45-60.
This one has smoothed up like glass and real pleased with the fit of the wood.
They have a kinda dull finish on them but a few coats of Casey gun stock oil really makes them nice.

Thanks Pitchy for reply. I called them and asked about availability of the 50-95 and its only avail. in 22' but they have both listed calibers in the 28". Then I asked about availability of brass and they don't have it.
Kinda funny that gun manufactor will spin out obsolete calibers and then don't take advantage of having brass to sell with them. SnR

If I was getting a .50-95 I'd get the 22" and turn the barrel half-round, cut the mag as a "button" mag tube, and I'd then I'd convert the stock to a shotgun/flat butt plate. Close to this...

 I WOULD do that IF I had the rifle. I've already got the SRC and I just can't see justification for the "cat" rifle. On the other hand I ALWAYS wanted the SRC. Don't know why. Nobody in the family was ever in the NWMP. I like it. Learned a lot loading for it. Hope to learn some more. Hope to shoot it more. Hope to hunt with it more.

Howdy from southern Michigan. About 2 months ago I bought a Chapparel 50-95 short rifle on Gunbroker for $499. So far I have not had to buy a lot of replacement parts, only a firing pin, firing pin retractor, and extractor from Winchester Bob ( excellent quality parts ). The list of rework however is quite long - fitted O.S. link pins, laser welded the bolt face and recut it to reduce headspace, welded and repaired rim support nub on bolt, refinished the wood to make it look more like walnut, straightened and refit R.H. sideplate, replaced sights with original semi buckhorn rear and Marbles gold bead front, and a ridiculous amount of deburring internaly. The barrel and chamber look very good. The bore slugs at .511 and has a twist of about 1 in 36" and is quite smooth.

I picked up a set of RCBS Legacy dies for $50 and some 50-90 Sharps brass to form cases with. So I guess I'm not in too deep with it so far, but it's a darn good thing I like working on guns. ------------------------- GeezerD

yes, that SRC is appealing, and if i see a repro SRC at good price, i will grab one.

the 'cat rifle' tho would make a good project! i like mine, though i dont know if it ever got any where near a cat bigger than a tabby!
