What kind of sling is this?

Post by awp101 »

Besides leather... :P

I ran across a table of them at a show a while back and only picked up 3. Now I want more but I don't know what term or style to use in my searches.

Standard military sling. They come in several widths.

Sling, rifle, leather, M1907. In use by our military for over 50 years, still used by Service Rifle competitors. Brownell's has them, among others. 1 1/4" width is standard, other widths are available.

A-ha! I was thinking civilian, not military.

I don't think the ones I have are 1 1/4" though. I think they are narrower so that's what I'll keep an eye out for.

Thanks!

Yes, you figured out you had it on backwards.

Most today don't apreciate how much a shooting sling can add to your shooting. On levers and some other guns it can be problematic pulling a tight sling, but on bolt guns and those that can take it, it really adds stabilty. A hasty sling helps, but isn't quite as stable as a shooting sling.
"Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat." -Theodore Roosevelt-

Isnt it amazing how many people post without reading the thread?

Yes, a good sling does add to your stability when shooting a side lever from the standing position. Even those nylon webbing slings used on the Mattell Toy 16 worked ok for that.
