If ya read the comments after the story one person suggested that the pilot wired the stick so to stay in a roll so he could bail out.
Any thoughts about that?

What a find! Thanks for posting that. WW II aircraft are one of my interests.

No doubt! Reminds me of this:
"Flight of the Phoenix" with James Stewart.
My father's best AF buddy flew P-38s in and out of North Africa. He was like an uncle to me. Thankfully never shot down or hurt despite many combat missions -- an angel on his wings that carried him on through F-86s in Korea and electronic surveillance (SAM sites) in a C-47 over N. Vietnam.
Regarding the P-40 - there are a number of videos on Youtube showing the wreck rapidly deteriorating as looters now know about it. The very first video which was supposedly taken at the time of discover shows the canopy nearly completely intact (no broken plexiglass), the ring gunsight in place, etc. The video also shows guys looting the .50-cal rounds out of the ammo boxes which explains some of the sheet metal damage on the wings. I hope somebody can drag that thing out of the desert before it is completely destroyed. As far as wiring the stick - I don't think so. The first video shows the canopy fully closed so the pilot looks to have re-closed the canopy after exiting the aircraft.
