Never buy Retail...

Post by Old Ironsights »

I wonder how many people realize how bad they are getting the shaft on stuff?

I use a non-persistent weed killer on my gravel parking pad. It takes just over 2 gallons per treatment, and usually no more than 2 treatments per year.

For about $96 I can buy 1.7 gal of Roundup Pro Max, (Glyphosate) which makes 106 gal of spray :?

OR

I can go to the CoOp and get 2.5 gallons of "Landmaster BW" Glyphosate+2,4-D which makes roughly 240 gal of spray... for $44. :o

Hmmm.... do you see the problem here?

YEP I had an aquarium that got a "bug" in it. The pills at the pet shop was $20 or more. Fleet Farm had the same stuff in powder form for $3.39 considering gas had just gone up to $1.29 a gallon; and i bicycled to work there 3 times a week, that was alot of money left over to buy .22 ammo they had on sale. :D
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

It's OK to buy retail - just don't PAY "retail".

Whatever the market will bear... Whatever the market will bear... Best shafting I've seen was at a place I worked that made remote sensing infrared thermometers... The device came equipped with a laser sight that pointed a dot to let you know where you had the device pointed.. But for an extra $65 bucks you could purchase better grade device with a special lens that would spread the laser beam into a grid pattern so you could measure a zone, also it measured temps 100 degrees hotter than the lesser model. The lenses were plastic, about the diameter of a pencil eraser and identical in size. Everything on these devices was identical (except the plastic lens) however the higher priced one was calibrated merely by being aimed at a hotter heat standard but in the same manner as the less expensive model. BTW... Either lens cost a half cent to produce!

I shun both E-Bay & their corporate posession PayPal, because of their anti-gun stance & activities - and would urge every other gun owner to follow suite.

As IIRC Ben Franklin once said something to the effect of: " If we do not hang together, we most assurredly will hang separately".

Also, ordering Pesticides/herbicides/hazmat over ebay has more costs than I want to deal with...

I would agree that many people don't search as hard as they might for the better deal, but I think it would be hard to argue that Americans are not all about low cost above everything else. It's why nothing is made here anymore and "big box" stores dominate the landscape.

And just to play the other side, I'll note that while Home Despot and Low's are a bit of a drive for me and clearly lower in price, I still prefer to park right in front of the door and walk into my local Ace Hardware that's a half mile away. They have actual people there to help me quickly find what I need and it's a joy to do business there vs. the drudgery of going to a big box. Yes, it costs more and I'm not ignorant of that fact. I gladly pay it and I think most of their business makes that informed value judgement as well. Some of the prices I do balk at, however, and go in search of a better deal.

Now back in the small town I grew up in of course we got our goods at the Co-Op and Tractor Supply. I wish I had that option in Tucson!

But fellers, that's the American way! Buy low, sell high. Profit is the single most important aspect of any business. Keep the costs as low as possible and sell for as high as the market will bear. Whaddaya, a comminuist?...

Reloaders' tumbling media -
Go to your neighborhood pet store and you can buy "litter" material that is the same stuff sold as either corncob or walnut shell media, depending upon what they have. I bought a lifetime supply of the stuff for a fraction of what I would pay Midway or other suppliers.
