Savage 99 lever gun PICTURES ADDED
I'm a long time member and looker, I don't remember if I've ever poster here.
I seek the boards guidance and wisdom for a great good friend of mine.
His mother-in-law has a Savage 99 lever gun in 308 Win with an octagon barrel. Serial number D4004XX and is looking for a value on this rifle.
He looked at the rifle and said it is in Very Good condition, it is a Cherry if you will.
Can one of the boards Savage experts please give some insight as to when this gun was made and it's value.
Thank you in advance for any and all answers.
Tom

Re: Savage 99 lever gun
Note: None of this post is relevant to the gun posted above.
According to Murry, 3rd Ed. it was made between 1930 & 1960 (332,000 - 1,060,000)
I'm guessing 1955-1960 as the .308 didn't appear in that sn range until 1955.
Oddly, on a quick re-read of Murray, the .308 also did not appear until AFTER sn 900,000, so I'm a little stumped.
The roll mark on the barrel should say:
SAVAGE ARMS CORPORATION
UTICA, N.Y. -- MADE IN U.S.A.
No Roll mark, and it's a rebarrel, though the carrier should be too short for the .308... ???
The buttplate could have a stylized "SVG" in a circle on it or nothing at all.
The "D" code puzzles me because it didn't appear on the SN until 1981, but the sn should also be above 1,000,000.
Where is the SN stamped?
Beyond that, unless you disclose what version it was (R, RS, EG) or post a pic, I can't look up anything further...

Octagon fits, but SN doesn't. It would have a sub 10,000 sn followed by an AS...ollogger wrote:could be a 1895 anniversary edition made in 1970 with 9,999 made

The more I think about it, the more I'm leaning toward an 1981/1982 99-A with an octagon re-barrel...

If it's a "Factory Custom" 99-A FROM '81+ then the barrel roll would read:
----- SAVAGE ARMS -----
WESTFIELD, MASS, U.S.A
I don't have a serial # list for late-model "D" code guns...

Re: Savage 99 lever gun
[an 1981/1982 99-A with an octagon re-barrel...]
That's probably what it isn't..............
The ONLY .308-chambered Savage 99 issued with an octagonal bbl is the 1970,75th Anniversary Model (looks exactly like a 99A, though), with brass blade front sight, engraved scroll on the action and a stock medallion.
They seem to have high asking prices ($1100-$1300), but not many buyers, since Savage 99 collectors abhor them, and they're too dear for most shooters/hunters.

Re: Savage 99 lever gun
But like I said, the SN given in the OP would preclude an Anniversary edition...

Re: Savage 99 lever gun PICTURES ADDED
A C ("clip") model with octagon barrel...
Let me check my notes...
OK. All I can figure is this:
The action and furniture is standard 1974-1979 "C" model. (I'd say '76-'79 because of the pressed skip-checkering pattern)
The Barrel is NOT "stock" for that frame. The roll mark on the barrel definitively places it as an Anniversary model barrel (1970 only).
The SN does NOT match any of the rules for SNs of that era (up to 1985) except placement on the frame. (Caviat, it MIGHT match a late 70's SN (aprox 1977/78), but not with that barrel...)
My only supposition at this point is that it is a custom gun from the Savage Custom Shop where they used a spare octagon Anniversary barrel with standard sights and that the SN of "C4004xx" reflects the "C"ustom nature.
I'd call Savage. It might be one of a kind...

Re: Savage 99 lever gun PICTURES ADDED
For comparison, here is my 1968 "C" model:
Note that the SN is NOT on the lower left of the receiver, which dates my "C" as "earlier" than yours, though my SN is 1167xxx. (At some point someone put a 1981 era Savage marked "white line" butt-pad on mine.)
Between 1949 and 1972 all 99s have a small stamp on the front of the lever boss just above the link pin. It will be a small circle or oval with one or two numbers and a letter. The letter corresponds to the date of manufacture. An "A" code is 1949. A "V" code (like mine) is 1968. A "Z" is 1972. "O" and "Q" were not used because of possible confusion/punch wear.
The "C" model was introduced in 1965. Between 1971 and initial discontinuation in 1986(?) the SNs had a series code beginning with "A". By 1981 they were up to "D", which would put a "C" code 99C anywhere in that date range (probably 77/78) - though in the case of the Octagon barrel it could still mean "C"ustom. No way of knowing. (My info on the late series (A-D) sn stamped guns is sketchy & derivative.)
The 99C was briefly reintroduced from 1995 to 1998 but I have no data on it.

Re: Savage 99 lever gun PICTURES ADDED
It looks like a rebarreled 99C. Tang safeties are late model, detachable magazines are late model, the stock has obviously been refinished, and the barrel is from the 70' special edition everyone's mentioned. If pushed, all base model parts, modifications, chambering, and care in assembly indicate a kitchen table custom Savage Model 99. I'd say it's worth right around $300 - $385 depending on how bad you want it.
Keep in mind, the tang safety wasn't put there because that's where "God intended it," but replaced previous safeties to cut production costs, the same thing - X5 - when it comes to the detachable magazine. The 99C still retained the form and some of the balance that made the 99's wanted, but that's about it. The 99C was not the model folks swooned over when talking about another era of quality guns that simply can no longer be reproduced at a blue-collar cost. It was a final feeble gasp on the way out.
Just for reference, I just bought (not last year, not last winter or week, today) a Savage M99 chambered in 250-3000, all original in 100% mechanical condition and 90% cosmetic condition for $550. And I think I paid a fair (not a too little, not too much) price.

Re: Savage 99 lever gun PICTURES ADDED
I'm pretty sure it would have been a Factory/Custom Shop rebarrel because I can't imagine any "spare" Anniversary Barrels ever made it to the Parts Chain... and am even more skeptical that it came off another gun...

But why would they waste it on a 99C? Anyway, if it shoots and you like it, buy it. Re: Savage 99 lever gun PICTURES ADDED
Probably because whomever ordered it wanted both Octagon and the removable magazine (easier to "unload" in those states that require that guns in vehicles during hunting season be unloaded) and that's all that was available to order New. By 1985 the 99C was the only 99 you could buy from Savage NIB.Idiot wrote:But why would they waste it on a 99C? Anyway, if it shoots and you like it, buy it.
