GK Jr. has got a job as a Ranger.

Post by gamekeeper »

Sorry RR7 not a Texas Ranger although he will carry a gun! his job title is "Red Squirrel Ranger" he starts on Monday in Northumberland near Newcastle, as a Grey Squirrel trapper for a conservation group called "Red Squirrels Northern England", their aim is to protect our native Reds by eradicating as many Greys as possible in the few strongholds where Reds are still found.
He should get plenty of shooting as he has to liaise with local landowners.

Although a few hundred miles south of him just to help him out I shot this Grey today, 63 yds with a CCI CB long. DRT.

So what's Jr. going to be using? And, I take it the grays push out the reds when they move in. Sorry, not real squirrel educated.

Kimwcook,
Apart from cage traps, Jr.will use his CZ .22LR and maybe his Remington 28GA. The Greys carry Squirrel pox that kills our native Reds.

Congrats! Sounds like my dream job!

The grays aren't native? Where'd they come from? I suppose they claim descent from Norman stock-- their ancestors made the voyage with William in 1066...

NO! they came from the good old USA in I think the 19th century. Some old Duke brought them over to run around his country estate. :D

Oh that's funny! If the good Lord had made me an eccentric Duke, that's exactly the sort of Duke I'd have been! Deer hunting is rewarding. Javelina hunting is exciting. But squirrel hunting is pure joy.

GK,

From an old Army Ranger, that sounds really great! He has a well deserved Ranger "Hoo-ah" from me! :D
I wish your GK Jr. many confirmed on his "enemy" and that he does well in his job. He has a superb teacher, and you have done so well now teaching him that he may well go on to be known as the master one day. :)

Again, happy to hear that bit of news..

Do call in when you visit :D

That was a cracking/salute shot with a CB long! Won't be pinching logs from your stack! :D

Nice countryside Game Keeper! :D Jr is gonna have a blast shooting those tree rats. Squirrel hunting has always been a favorite of mine as there's lots of action.

I'm curious. How much do you have to pay for a box of .22's over the great pond?--------Sixgun

CCI Mini Mags are around $11.00 per 100 the same as we pay for a Gallon of Gas!
CCI standard are $10.29 American Eagle are $8.90 and Blaser are $7.12
Prices do vary a bit and cheap MagTech etc can be found but a lot of gun shops only stock a few brands and then not the complete range. :(

Congratulations to GK Jr.

Yes Nath beat me to it, 63 yards with a CB Long is a good shot. You must have them dialed in pretty good.

Getting paid to go squirrel hunting... does it get any better?

Maybe he could find a way to send us some pictures of his new job.

I get a fair bit of practise from my bedroom/office window, I usually use sub sonics but I have temporary neighbours with young kids so went for the quiet option. I was surprised that it was a clean kill, the squirrel didn't move from where he was hit, just a couple of kicks and he was done for! the bullet went through his ribs and didn't exit.

That is good news to hear. I became aware of the gray squirrel problem in Great Britain a while back. It seems that we aren't the only ones with feral exotics.

A short time ago I have a safety class and had to buy some 22 RL ammunition. I became somewhat shocked at how much the price has gone up but after reading what you posted regarding prices it isn't that bad.

Gray squirrel isn't that bad for table fare I may add.

Whoa! What amazes me is not the cost of the ammo, but the gas! And to think we yanks cry over $3.79 Thank you! :D -----------Sixgun

That is great! I like those Red Squirrel ears.

Great stuff - I envy your son's job!

We have public service to the County in my father's history, too.

He told me that back when he was a youngster, some time around the 1920's, he was Unofficial Watermelon Tester of Bollinger County, Missouri. That is, he helped the farmers test their melons at night, but apparently they didn't realize his exalted status. The evidence of their ignorance was the rock salt from their scatterguns that was aimed at his hastily retreating backside.
