Update on madmans challenge a few months ago

Post by rjohns94 »

A few months ago, madman posted on the fountain of youth. In that post, he encouraged us to lift weights, take control of our diets, workout, get in shape. Well I took it to heart. For years since I had a back operation and knee operation, I have said I wanted to loose weight, desired to loose weight, and each year it seemed I had to desire to loose even more weight. Well, since that post, I have lost 30#, I have doubled my bench rest weight and reps, and I'm daily running from 40-60 mins. My weight continues to drop as does my resting heart rate. I am guessing I will drop another 15 or so pounds but wanted to let you know the progress and offer my thanks to madman and perhaps encourage each of you. Blessings

I made the mistake of letting my wife sell my bench and weight set prior to our move into this rental house.... after I get to Mississippi, I'm getting another set up.

I occaisonally do "stretching" with my pump gun. when it gets too easy I'll load 'em up with 1-1/8 oz shorties and after that buffs me up I'll go full on with the 3" loads. Measured progressive...ness.......

Thanks for the encouragement, I'll try to add reps soon

Exercise increases endorphins (feels good), increases testosterone (makes you enthusiastic about life), improves circulation (reduces risk of MI or CVA, and improves odds of surviving one), and strengthens muscles.

The problem is finding time, if you work 65-70 hours a week, especially if you have other 'stuff' to do around the home/farm. LOTS of the 'work' we do wears us out, but isn't really 'cardiac' exercise.

I've been thinking the same thing. I've never had to worry about my weight before, as I have always had a physical job. Now that I have a little easier job and I'm not as active, I can definitely tell it around the midsection. I have resolved to start working out again and become a lot more flexible after this bout with my back is cleared up. I have a weight bench I need to get some weights for and get set up, and I really need to do some good stretching and get my cardio back to a respectable level. That really helps out on the long mulie hunts.

Congrats Mike - though I didn't think you had that much available weight to lose!

I also lost 30 pounds last year - a modified exercise and diet approach given my back. I still can't run; 5 minutes of the impact and my back is toast. Hopefully someday...

Let me suggest a VKR (Vertical Knee Raise) Tower. They actually take up less real space than a Bench and give you a more balanced workout. Plus, there are no weights to trip over or mechanicals to break.

I started mid Jan and am down two belt notches. I'm now nursing a tendon issue in my right arm and left shoulder and I'm sore all the time, but I feel great.
Kind regards,

This is great progress. Congrats to you and your efforts.
My work has changed from street duty to corrections/court security activities which restricts movement greatly. Time to start a proper exercise and stretching program before I "grow" out of my gunbelt and pants!

Great progress and fine example. I've lost about 75#, the first 50 to eating like a man should. The next 25 to chemo and marrow transplant.

I am stable and gaining in health everyday and right back on a healthy lifestyle. A guy dodges a bullet and life looks real attractive. I work a ton too and log many hours in my truck as a travelling salesman. It is very hard to find time for cardio as well.

I am looking into tai chi, looks like karate on valium, it might add something I need in mobility and balance. I got real clumsy this year and can't afford broken bones for awhile, they don't heal yet for me. I'm realizing stress is just as deadly as fat. I was a pretty good linebacker once and never wrapped quite tight enough. Pray every day for guidance and a gentler spirit. My wife says its working.

removing stress and obtaining balance in my schedule is something I'm working on too. The running helps with the stress. As do the shooting sports (archery and firearms). Hanging with the horse and mule does wonders too. Good luck with your recovery Canuck Bob. You are in the Calgary area aren't you? I am thinking of being in your area late june, heading up to Jasper. Blessings
