Make a spoon ring

Post by Pitchy »

Made a ring from a old silver spoon , heat it red hot and let cool to soften it up then bend it around something the size ya want.
Turned out nice. 8)

Man, you are LATE to the party. :)
Had one of those in '69 & wore it for several years till my finger put on too much weight.
Still have it someplace, with a good deal of the pattern worn off & one edge thinned almost sharp enough to cut with.
If it still fit, I'd still be wearing it.

We always figured they were more of the hippy period, still cool.
The ones made from coins are neat too.

Further back enlisted men made them for wedding rings, silver coins were cheaper than rings.

Old,
I'll keep that in mind if I ever go back East again. :)
In my case, the edge didn't start out that way, it happened naturally on its own over a period of several years of wearing it.

Pitchy,
The tail end of the Hippy Era's when I got it, you're right on with the association. Picked it up from a tray of several at a head shop someplace I disremember. :)
I had it all of my senior year of highschool, so it would've been '68 actually when I got it.

I tried making one from a modern quarter and it didn`t work well.
Also ya have to use a plastic mallet or you`ll ruin the text on the coing.
I chucked the coin and drilled a half inch hole in it, then put it on a tapered mandrel and hammered it over.
Pretty easy but ya gotta be gentle  :)

Neither is coordination. :)

Interesting! Is the ring sterling silver, plated, or?

Reason I ask is that sterling seems to be relatively soft.
If using a sterling spoon, would it be likely to hold up well
over time, and would heating it still be required?

Thanks for sharing!

Not sure, it was a very old spoon so i`d think so.
After you heat it it will turn black but will polish up again and the heat makes it bend easy.
Do a google about it and you`ll find lots of info also.

Boy, was I way off. I was going to say hang the spoon with a string and smack it with a hammer. To quote Yoda, "Egg on my face I have."

When I was in school one of my buddies used to make rings from coins using a nail that was sticking out of a board and a big serving spoon he used for a mallet. A pure silver dime made a nice ring for the girls.
