Puma 92 brass frame

Post by TX50Cal »

Was at the local shop when The owner showed me a LSI Puma 92 he took in on a trade. The rifle is a 38/357 with brass frame and round bbl and some really ugly black stock/forearm. I ended up putting it in lay-away for $300. Gun looks to not have been fired hardly at all. Is there any way to strip the stock/forearm without sanding to refinish? Does anyone have one of these that they have stripped? How was the wood underneath? Thanks for any info on this rifle. And yes it does have the stupid little safety on the bolt.

From my year ago Rossi searches here, I do remember postings that had to do with the dark colored wood. Some had taken that finish off and had good results with refinishing. Exactly what they did to remove the old finish, I can't remember. A search of the Forum and a little time and you'll probably get a few recommendations for taking that dark stuff off. Hopefully, someone will chime in here either with a better memory than mine or actual experience with these older Rossis.

Is it a dark wood finish or black paint?

I've seen the black painted stocks with the brass frames. I think they look rather nice!

Once you strip off the black paint, you might find wood plugs filling voids. I did on an 1897 Shotgun (China) I tried to refinish a brown painted stock.

No big deal, just repaint it black..........

Yes it does look like black paint. It actually does look pretty good with the brass frame. May leave it as is but wanted to have some options.

Thanks Shawn,
after looking at your link mine must be painted because it is not just dark it is black like ebony.. I may just leave it as it is and if it gets scratched just throw some black paint on it :)
When I pick it up I'll post some pictures.

Here's one like it. It was sent to me back in the early 2000's for action work and some brass tracks.

This is one of the older interarms imported Rossi's. It had some really dark stained wood before I stripped it. Once I got the black off I found the forewood was blonde with no figure and the butt was red with some figure.
To match it up I had to stain the forewood red and smear on some sharpie marks to give it some figure.

BTW, After I stripped it with Stripez, I used the heavy duty easy-off oven cleaner and Brownells Whiting with MEK to get it as light as I could.

Good lookin 92's Nate. I may just leave it black. I'd hate to get the paint off and find ugly wood underneath, but then again I don't mind taking a risk :D I would like to get one of your safety replacement plugs eventually though.

While you're at it, you should also consider Steve's terrific action kit. He gives you a DVD to walk you through each step in slicking up the action and trigger. It's so well done a 10 year old could follow it. You'll also get a steel follower to replace the yellow plastic one and a reduced power ejector spring for the slick up job. I used Steve's kits on 3 Rossis (my carbine and rifle and a neighbor's) and all came out slick as snot. It's really a 'must have' for a new Rossi.

And you're right, that stupid bolt safety has got to go and Steve's plug is just the ticket.

The nice thing about taking off paint and finding ugly is that you can put the paint back on...
