Need some veneer

Post by J Miller »

I am repairing a sewing machine cabinet and need some thin veneer.
I've tried the major home improvement stores and none have any. I've asked for door skins and none have any of that either.
The veneer I need is no thicker than the cardboard on the back of a legal tablet.

Some years ago I bought some that came in a roll and was self adhesive. The stickum didn't work worth a darn but with some glue I did the top of my old desk. I can't even find that now.
This town is devoid of anything I want.

So, does anybody here have any thin veneer? Any color. All I need is a 3'X3' piece.

Check with any specialty woodworking shops or wood shops in your area.

Not a bad idea. I'll check around for some Monday.

Hey, Joe, that's interesting stuff. Hope you post about this like you did with the machine itself! :) Thanks.

Woodcraft.com has a good supply. I was blown away at some of the prices on the very special stuff, like burls.

I redid a cedar chest once with maple veneer once. I got mine on Ebay.

Wow, some of those prices make me wanna cry.

I think I'll exhaust the local possibilities before I go mail order, but thanks for the links. There is a lot of stuff there I might could use besides the veneer.

claybob86,
I'm taking pics as I go. Look for a story, possibly a multi-part story called: The Resurrection of Mrs. Franklin.

Joe,
Afamily friend just completed refinishing an old treadle powered Singer machine and cabinet for my daughter.
He was able to find the cabinet trim parts and veneer at some on line Singer sites. In less than 5 minutes with Google, my wife also located similar sources. You might give that a try.

crs,

It would have been sweet of your wife to put the links in the post. You see I'm Google challenged. My searches usually turn into disasters.
I'm also a member of two sewing related forums and I've had no results from my WTB adds there either.

However, I did find a local shop that said they have some. Gonna cost like the dickens but, no shipping and they'll answer questions.

Save on shipping and save buying more than you need by contacting (or just drop by) a cabinet making shop. These folks buy the stuff in bulk wholesale and may have plenty of scraps around that they'd sell ya cheap. I prefer the real deal and old fashioned contact cement.

That's what the place I talked to yesterday is. And that's the kind of glue they use. I'm just curious as to how strong a bond the contact cement makes. The cabinet the walls have the tongues and the bottom has the groves. Part of the walls are glued to the veneer, while the tongues are glued into the groves.
Also there is only 2 1/2 walls that are glued into the bottom. The door is "L" shaped and hinged on the left side. So support and glue bond strength is very important.
Here is a pic showing the insides of the cabinet and how the walls are attached.
Inside of cabinet.JPG
You can see the rust on the treadle plate mounts and some of the warping of the veneer. The bottom and walls have broken loose in this picture, only the very back and some of the veneer holding it together.

Here's a pic of the whole thing.

gluing up the veneer and reattaching the bottom will
take two different types of glue.
the veneer works well with contact cement [ large area]
and is very strong for that use.
the bottom [ small narrow groove ] will need a modern
two part epoxy, maybe, or gorilla glue, or some other
high strength glue.
you could place glue blocks inside the bottom corners to
add considerable strength to that joint.
good luck.
careful what you wish for, you might just get it.

Steve,

That's a nice open kitchen. My wife would love to have one like that.
The wood in the after pics is as outstanding as the before pics were dull.
I like the new counter tops too.

I've got a piece of veneer coming from a member of Homesteading forum.
She says she has been doing cabinet restoration for quite a few years. I'll pick her brain about the best cements.
I also found a local shop I was going to go to until the offer of the free piece of veneer came up.

As for gluing the bottom to the top, I don't want to use epoxy. Remember this cabinet is 100 years old and they didn't have that back then. I used Elmer's wood glue with wood fibers in it to re-glue the bottom. After it cures that stuff works pretty good.
So, most likely I'll use that to glue the bottom to the sides.
