OT Any pipe smokers out there?

Post by gamekeeper »

I gave up smoking a long time ago but I still ocasionally have a smoke of my old briar pipe. I never got on with English tobacco, I used to buy Swedish or American blends. I'd like to know what you guys smoke? (apart from nitro and black powder smoke).

Twenty (very) odd years ago I quit a 2pack a day habit by the use of a quality pipe.

We had a tobacconist that sold a really good vanilla cavendish blend called IQ140... mmmm...

A mountian evening on a wicker porch chair with good Pipe & glass of Scotch is my idea of a vacation.

Gk I enjoy a pipe now and then, it is a Petterson something or other straight. My nearest tobacconist has shut  so finding good baccer is difficult now but I use to get chopped black pig tail twist and mix equal amounts of black cherry to sweeten it up a little. A cool smoke that you don't need much of

I've heard it said that a pipe is a wonderful thing. It gives a wise man something to ponder or it gives a fool something to stick in his mouth.

I remember when cherry pipe tobacco was used to cover up the smell of something else.

ready to start back with a pipe.

I've tried a bunch and last pipe smoking i did had settled on plain jane Sir Walter Raleigh.

Nice to know you smoke tobacco with pipe and tobacco and paper with a cigarette.

I even have a cigar or chew from time to time. Would never have made it this far without tobacco ! :D

Now I know this doesn't include anyone here .... :) , but my 'ol man always used to say, " Never work with a guy that smokes a pipe, He'll spend half his time trying to get it lit, and the other half trying to keep it lit, and you'll end up doing all the work." :D

My granddad allways taught me " all things in moderation". He smoked Woodbines but only a few a day and lived into his mid eighties. I view smoking as a treat and hence can go without for days, I think that is a good thing.

Which is exactly why it works for helping you quit ciggerettes.

You need a smoke.

With Cigs you light up, and drag one down.

With a Pipe you:

Clean, Fill, Tamp, Light, Drag (shallow - less nic.), Tamp, Relight, Repeat, knock out the Cherry, put away pipe. IOW, a PITA unless you are lounging in a recliner with a Scotch. Definately not enough time to do all that between classes at the Uni.

Good way to taper off the Nic.

I used a pipe to quit cigarettes. I still keep one in my truck and smoke it every day. I guess I've always been a tobacco junkie! I get my tabacco from a pipe shop and they blend it custom for me. It smells so good you could eat it!

Ah, this was one of my favorite pastimes when I quit cigarettes.

Trouble was, after a couple years of this blend or that blend, I figured out that all I was looking for was that rich burley and virginia blend found in cigarette tobacco.

So I started mixing Prince Albert with some nice yellow virginia flake and that worked for a while.

I started sweet with cherry or vanilla and then burnt my tongue!
That's when I got to the more mellow smoke.

SInce then I've quit the pipe, but I roll Zig Zag into filtered tubes and throw a little pinch of pipe tobacco into each 6 oz. can.
It tastes good, smells great and doesn't have any filler loaded with formaldehyde, etc. Just good old Kentucky grown baccer, all shredded.
Plus, it works out to be $1.60 per pack.

Marlboro and winston smokers say they taste the same as theirs and are amazed that someone can roll their own and have them look/taste that good.
Too bad they are too lazy to do it themselves!

Pipe tobacco, (bulk US grown; not the imported stuff,) and cans of loose cigarette tobacco are in the tax class "J", and as such are not subject to the extreme taxation as your run-of-the-mill Class "A" cigarettes or even cigars. Uncle Slam gets even less, and you throw less money down the drain.

I loved a burley cherry blend, as well as Tinderbox Chartwell.
A friend of mine sent me some Frog Morton "On the Town" and "Across the Pond", and while I found the exoticism unique and was fully able to enjoy the aromatics, they were for rare smoking occasions -not an everyday thing for me, and I had to devote a pipe to each.

Well, truth be told, one must devote a pipe to each type he will smoke, and then, THEN if a man likes a certain blend for everyday, he needs THREE pipes to rotate so that one pipe doesn't get used two days in a row. They get a little gummy and swampy, don't you know.

Luckily for me, I liked Dr. Grabow full or half bent pipes, the drugstore kind, and didn't go out buying $200.00 briars. I liked the filters. it smoothed the smoke and kept the goop out of my mouth.

haha...

I even made a pipe and tamp mount for my coin tray in my truck using Sculpey clay!

Here is a forum for Chrstian pipe smokers, lots of good info here:

Nath,
I used to buy corn cob pipes when they only cost 70 pence each. They are good pipes but I never found them to last very long but at 70p it didn't really matter. The one I just ordered costs £5.99 still cheap enough! :D

I will, on occasion, smoke a brier or clay pipe filled with Watson's blend. It's described a mixture of favors from the original Craven’s recipe. Vintage tobaccos specially blended to “Dr. Watson’s own specificationsâ€

I rarely smoke my pipe, but am a daily pipe tobacco smoker. I love a good smoke of pipe tobacco, but don't have the time it takes to properly enjoy a pipe full.
Instead I buy cigarette papers and roll up a pinch of pipe tobacco. It smells and tastes great, and takes only 5 minutes to enjoy.
The only brand I smoke is blended at a local shop. I've been buying it from them for over 20 years. It's called "Shasta Black". Seems appropriate for me! :)

Sir Walter Raleigh suits me.

Of course both are full of cardboard, paper & misc. floor sweepings and burn hot.

Hard to find pure leaf and then it's expensive.

I imagine with your health care system, smoking of any kind is probably heavily-frowned upon!

20-odd years ago I enjoyed a cherry blend every now and again. One of the most peaceful days of my life was sitting by a roaring campfire, smoking a pipe, after a nice day of walleye fishing in the Alqonquin park in Ontario. I was really tempted never to come back!

When I smoked a pipe, I had four straight briars I inherited. I was told to let them completely dry before using again. Smoked an unflavored cake from the local tobacconist - IIRC it was a Virginia flake, press fermented.

Then switched to Partagas cigars. Then eventually quit it all. Thank goodness.
Kind regards,
Tycer

This is a tempting topic: I quitted smoking for fifteen years ago, but still miss it. However, I think my health benefits of having stopped.

But I had some favourite brands. First of all Erinmore Mixture, a irish blend with a quite personal charakter, spicy and slightly fruity. There is also a Erinmore Flake, and I often used that one too. Another one was Hunter's Mixture, a local Stockholm brand with some Latakia. Sometimes I bought a pouch of Narval, a strange french tobacco.

The only pipe tobacco i've ever enjoyed was a cherry tobacco this was over 35 years ago, and the only cigar I could enjoy was Swisher Sweets, but then again my Scotch of choice for many years has been CHIVAS REGAL, blue-collar tastes for a blue-collar income.

I quit smoking pipes & cigars almost 25 years ago.

When I smoked the pipes, I preferred the stronger Latakia & Perique tobacco blends, esp. those packaged by Balkan Sobrani in my Calabash & meerschaum pipes.

In the briars, I more often than not smoked Dunhill’s “Early Morning Pipeâ€

Quit cigarettes 13 years ago, and now normally smoke (1) cigar weekly.

It's normally on Saturday night watching a good western or war movie while drinking 3 or 4 of my different flavored homemade beers.

My youngest daughter buys me a box of Macaneudos (sp) once a year or so, usually at Christmas to keep me supplied. My tobacco and drinking pleasures are much less often than they used to be, but I think I enjoy them 5 times as much as I ever did in the past.

I have a supply of old pipes too. I also have a supply of tobacco (several different types) that I've kept moist in containers for about 10 years now. Whenever I open those containers up and take a sniff, the aromas are so wonderful they almost cart you away. I'll bet that stuff is as smooth as a $100 bottle of scotch. Maybe I'll substitute a pipeful some Saturday evening here.

I have smoked pipes since I was about 16 years old (that's almost 30 years!). I have always smoked custom blends, and have a quite impressive pipe collection. My favorite tobacco blend is made up by Three-Ten Pipe Shop in Murfreesboro, TN - it's called XL200, and it's offered for sale by request only. It was originally concocted by a retired Colonel named Ray Flournoy who owned a shop near Ft. Campbell - Ray was a great man, my "pipe mentor", and he was also a Master tobacconist. He made a blend called "Chateau" which has always been my favorite - it was a mildly aromatic blend, with a hint of vanilla taste. Very nice taste and aroma, and the blend proved so popular that a chain bought Ray out lock, stock and barrel, just to get the recipe for Chateau. Shortly after they absorbed Ray's shop and started selling Chateau (which immediately became their best-selling custom blend), they started cheaping-out on the ingredients, and Chateau became a bad imitation of itself. Ray was bound by his buyout not to sell anyone else the recipe for Chateau, but he did give the recipe to Three-Ten with the caveat that they not offer it "over the counter", so the guys at Three-Ten make it the way Ray used to under the XL-200 name, and offer it by request only.

If you want to email me your mailing address, I'll have them send you a sample.

That is great info Boge. I get all of my pipes and tobacco from Three-Ten. I'll go get me some Chateau to try. I have settled on a blend of two of their tobaccos that I sort of stumbled on when I was trying to learn what I liked. I can't remember what the blend is, but I think they kept it on file for me. Drop me an email if your ever down in Rutherford Co. and I'll buy lunch!

It's always been my experience that tobaco smoke, particularly pipe tobaco, smells much better than it tastes. I'd much rather have someone else do the smoking.

My wife is very asthmatic, so I cant be around the stuff, as even the smell on clothing can set her off.

no pipes...

I have picked up the cigar habit, though. Usually one a day.

I like most of the "P" cigars.... Padron, Punch, Perdomo, Patel....

Fuente's are really nice, but usually a touch more expensive than I want for a daily smoke.

I quit cigarettes 4 weeks ago today.

I think I might like to smoke a pipe or cigars, I'm just not sure how to get started. Cigars I smell don't impress me at all.

Smoked pipes and cigars for 40 years. Loved Balkin Sobrani when it was available, now I smoke Balkan Sasieni blended by a member of the family that produced Sobrani. A new shipment is on its way to me as I write. I think better when puffing on a pipe. Stogies are for relaxation, but the pipe is a antenna for inspiration.

Smoke Royal Jamaica, Macanudo, La Gloria Cubana, Partagas, Arturo Fuente, and about anything I can get my hands on.

When I was in the horse business many years ago, most of us chewed tobacco - smoking wasn't allowed in the barns. Now that's a nasty habit. Just try and find a plug of Bull O' the Woods - spits like drain crankcase oil, makes women faint.
