Call it what you want.

Post by Triggernosis »

As an NRA certified rifle instructor, I'm frustrated by the abomination of something that gets under my skin almost daily, that is: the correct pronunciation of "Garand". If I'm not mistaken, it should be properly pronounced "'Gerund", similar to "errand" and not "Ga'RAND". However, I don't think I've ever heard the proper pronunciation used anywhere, whether it be at the local gun store or Camp Perry. Let's all make an effort to correct this travesty of speech and honor John C. Garand in a manner befitting his family name!
Please join me in an effort to get everyone in the same boat.

I have heard the same thing regarding pronunciation. However, as they said in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence: "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend".

You will not be successful in your endeavor and may just make yourself look like a bit of a tool by trying to change the generally accepted pronunciation of the name.

If you want to go to war over something, smite down the inappropriate use of 'clip' as a synonym for magazine.

It is pronounced Ga-Rand. Mr. Garand's grandaughter works at company that I work with when I have a
project out her way. She answers the phone Ga-Rand.

hope that helps.

The one that makes my skin crawl is when someone (usually a radiologist) pronounces the word 'centimeter' as if it is spelled 'Sonnometer'.

Are there one hundred 'sonts' in a dollar, or is 100 years a 'sontury'...?

I assume it is some sort of Euro-wannabe affectation, but it just makes them sound incredibly stupid when I hear it.

My two biggest mistakes, and no offense if you say it this way, as it's become the accepted speech it seems like, are ek-specially instead of especially, and #1 is ek-scape instead of escape. Drives me absolutely nuts.

Slap away.
Merriam-Webster Dictionary wrote:ir·re·gard·less adv \ˌir-i-ˈgärd-ləs\
Definition of IRREGARDLESS
nonstandard
: regardless
Usage Discussion of IRREGARDLESS
Irregardless originated in dialectal American speech in the early 20th century. Its fairly widespread use in speech called it to the attention of usage commentators as early as 1927. The most frequently repeated remark about it is that “there is no such word.” There is such a word, however. It is still used primarily in speech, although it can be found from time to time in edited prose. Its reputation has not risen over the years, and it is still a long way from general acceptance. Use regardless instead.
Examples of IRREGARDLESS
I told them that irregardless of what you read in books, they's some members of the theatrical profession that occasionally visits the place where they sleep. —Ring Lardner, The Big Town, 1921
Origin of IRREGARDLESS
probably blend of irrespective and regardless
First Known Use: circa 1912
Proper? No. But, let me axe you this, when has that stopped the largely unwashed masses from mutilating the mish-mash we call English?

I'll bet no one has ever manufactured a steam roller for over 75 years.

The neat thing about this great country is all the different accents. I live in Central Illinois and have all my life but I have more of a southern accent than my Mom who grew up in Kentucky. I'm always asked where I came from. I tell people I've lived here all my life and they ask why I talk that way. My brother moved to Southerm Mississippi 15 years ago and never picked up the drawl but his daughter sounds like she has been there all her life. His son made sure to keep his northern nothing sound and couldn't wait to move back to Illinois when he was old enough. If you want to listen to an interesting conversation listen to a couple of cajons carry on. Different parts of the country can sure enough change the way words are pronounced.
