Let's see your big trucks/huntin' rigs!

Post by shooter »

Marvin S's post and some pics that Sixgun has put up before have got me curious as to what everyone's huntin' rig looks like. Or maybe you just have a big truck you want to show off. Here's mine. It's nothing special. Just a '93 Ford with a 6" lift and 35" tires. Pretty standard, but I got a heck of a deal on it.

I don't do a whole lot of recreational off-roading, but I've been in enough jams in my old 2 wheel drive truck while out hunting that I decided I needed something to remedy that.

Nothing too special here --- Ford is a late model , but has enough miles on it that i dont worry at all about a few scratches. 2wd with limited slip generally gets me everywhere i need to go and there is plenty of cab room to keep my gear out of the elements

The little wrangler , i want to use because its a cool 4-by, but i need to at least get a hitch rack --- if i pull a small trailer with it, mileage plummets to below the level of the Ford, so its arguably not worth it (my hunting area is 130 miles away from me)

But i hope to try it out with a hitch rack before the season is over -

Shooter, Thats a clean lookin' Ford pick-em-up-truck. Not a spot of rust on it.

Jeepnik---I have never seen a Scrambler that was not 99% rust---Whats your secret?

Puttin' on new shocks last year--I have no idea why I take stupid pictures like this but I do.

Nice truck, there. 8)

Where I live there would not be that much metal left on a truck that got used year round. Roads get salted during winter here.

Sixgun, I had the body double undercoated when I bought it. I did have some trying to get started underneath the rear fender flares. I happen to find it when changing them out to a wider set. I dealt with it, and sealed the seam between the metal and the flare with silicone to prevent water from getting in. I think the telling thing is that my cab floor is in excellent shape. As you know, the floor seem to go first. Of course living near the ocean hasn't helped, but so far it hasn't hurt either.

Nice rigs, gentlemen! I love all the Jeeps!!

Sixgun, thanks for the compliment, but you can't see under the truck in my pics  I am going to get under there and remove all the rust from the undercarriage pretty soon. It's been on the "to do" list, but haven't got around to doing it yet. Not sure how I'm gonna go about it, but I'm sure I'll figure something out.

Mine is nothing fancy, just a 2003 Nissan Frontier 4x4 King Cab XE Edition. I got it back when I still lived on Maui, bought it used in Oct. 2004 with 8000 miles on it. This truck got me everywhere I wanted to go so never made any modifications. This picture was taken at my favorite spot on Maui at Kahikinui. I fished and hunted on the same trips usually popping a billy on my way out with my 357 mag Rossi single shot which was kept in truck. Some of the oldtimers here may recall my Maui exploits.

In 2005, the odometer quit working at 202,000 miles. My 1989 Silverado releases a large cloud of blue smoke during the first start of the day; the radiator leaks a bit, and rusty of course!!! It has never failed me...

The big, red one is a 1964 Dodge W300, one ton, 4wd. The white one is a 1967 Dodge W200 crew cab, 3/4 ton, 4wd. Both are former Air Force trucks. Both are rolling projects and used for work. The W200 crew cab is used most frequently, as my fur friend, a Great Pyrenees, frequently rides with me.

Hey Mike, the red one looks like some of the "Ramp" trucks we used in the Fire Department. They usually had a Chlorobromomethane unit for fire suppression in the bed. Later ones had either dry powder or Halon units. Where did you get it?

Jeepnik, I bought the red W300 from a fella near San Antonio, TX, who purchased it at auction (I think) from a rual fire department in northeast Oklahoma (South Coffeeville). There is Air Force blue paint under several coats of red, as well as a military data tag on the dash. It has some holes and miscellaneous marks in the bed that indicate it might have had some sort of large tank mounted to the floor at some point. Unfortunately, beyond that, I know little of its history.

here's where I spend some quality time with sheepdogs...the bumpers, like those on this patrol car, have been used during deer season...not as interesting as an older levergun in 38-40, but effective never-the-less--although Patrol Sergeants frown on this sort of activity...paper-work is nasty... :(

No picture but I drive a 2005 Ford Ranger. Extended cab 4X4. I did put 33 inch tires on it that fills up the wheelwells pretty good and a Leer topper. I sleep in it so I haul my deer home on a receiver basket.

OK Grizz, what's the story on that rig.
Glad you asked. That little skiff is a 14' Lund with a 15 Hp Evinrude. It has carried several hunters and 7 or 8 deer at a time. Sometimes I hunt from town with the Lund, and sometimes I carry the skiff on top of the "hayrack" when going out on longer trips.

I've shot deer from the deck of my fishing boat and fetched them with the skiff. Sometimes I bring them back whole and hang them from the boom the skiff is suspended from, and gut them right there, letting the guts and gurry go directly overboard. Then I hose them down with the seawater hose. Clean meat.

That fishing boat is a retired U.S. Navy tugboat, YTL class, that I aquired from someone who got her from the Navy and gutted the hull of all the machinery and equipment. I bought a rebuilt 8V-71 NA with the smallest injectors, mated it to a Tonan 5.5:1 reduction gear with a hydraulic PTO, and welded it to the frame where the old reverse gear sat. Original was a 6 cylinder Hamilton with an 8 inch bore. It had a separate reduction and reverse gear, and was known to be tempermental and cranky, but it turned a 76" X 60" prop and had good thrust for her duties.

She had been mothballed in WA state for twenty years and was in almost pristine condition when I got her, as pristine as a boat operated by land lubbers for forty or more years can be. Her 2,000 gallons of fuel rode in double bottom tanks. Her original 2000 PSI air system was gone, I substituted a 150 PSI system for the air start I eventually installed. I built and rebuilt all the systems to make the empty shell into a very productive and family friendly home-away-from-home recreational vehicle slash family business. She carried us countless thousands of miles for more than 200 at-sea days every year, and brought us home every time. Remarkable.

We hunted salmon and black cod and halibut during those seasons, hunted deer during their season, and transported freight and firewood the rest of the time.

And not least notably she could pack two jeeps or a good size pickemup truck on her back deck. Plus all the game. Quite the hunting rig, eh?

I have three hunting vehicles now I suppose you can say !

If I leave our property I use these two . Oh the pic was taken when we had the big snow here in Virginia in january and february of 2010 !

Image

This is my Chevy S-10 ZR2 4x4 extended cab my dad bought new in 2000 . At the time I had a black one just like it that was bought new in 1999 . Anyway when he got ready to trade this one it had about 42,000 on it and I took it off his hands . Now it's got about 150,000 !

Image

The one in the front is my 2000 but the one in the back is our 2003 Chevy S-10 4x4 crew cab . My maternal grandfather bought this one new in 2003 I believe and it came to us after his passing . Think it had maybe 35,000 when we got it and now it's got maybe 60,000 !

Image

This is my MAIN huntin vehicle !

My Kawasaki Brute Force 750i . This is the second Kawasaki 750 I've had the first didn't have fuel injection !
I'm not sure if this is the first 750 or the second 750 now that I look at the picture . Anyway thats my main means of transport on the actual hunting property !
Parkers , Mannlicher Schoenauer’s , 6.5mm's and my family in the Philippines !

Griff, if your gonna go big game hunting in a Kenny you really should invest in a big game pak for the rig.
Here's how it's done down under, and if anyone is tempted to ask, Yes , those bars are steel.
Image

You do need to watch how much velocity you use with a projectile that big. I've seen a rig pull into Perth with bits of tenderized beef scattered all the way up to the roof of the sleeper

Mine is a bit smaller and does less damage to the meat

gundownunder,

Yessir, many Canadian rigs and fellars in our northern states use those "muzzle covers" in anticipation of large game. Mainly moose, but in "free range" country, horse & cow are also a probability. I've used mine successfully for hunting fowl also. Those covers are almost useless for that! :P
