WC844 SURPLUS POWDER
Anyone tried this powder? I just ordered 8lbs at $85.00. Supposedly its close to h-335, maybe a little faster. Interested to hear about anyones experience with this.

I don't know anything about it but where did you order it from? 8# for $85; is it still available?

Re: WC844 SURPLUS POWDER
Just an slightly off thread question, but is there a surplus version of Win 748?
I use more of that than any other rifle powder.

Joe, im not sure about 748. I know that 4895 is available from time to time as surplus. They do have wc297 which is equivalent to 296.J Miller wrote:Just an slightly off thread question, but is there a surplus version of Win 748?

When I saw the post I was hoping someone would mention load data. I emailed Widener's asking where to find data and have not received a response.
Anyone know if data might be on the jug like I found on the 2230C I bought last decade?

Re: WC844 SURPLUS POWDER
The prudent thing to do is start 10 percent lower when using wc844. I understand it's close to 335 but some lots are a little faster. Same with wc297 and 4895 if you can find it.

Just to clarify. H335 data is used for the WC844? (with the noted 10% reduction and work up clause)

Re: WC844 SURPLUS POWDER
That's correct Sgt. I just ordered it and haven't tried it yet but everything I've read tells me it's very good powder. I was hoping someone else here had tried it and would let us know how they liked it. I'm going to try it first in my ar-15 then my 45-70s.

Re: WC844 SURPLUS POWDER
Yep, I've burned lots of it. My lot# is BAJ 47683 and it is somewhat faster than H-335. I bought it to use in the .223 back when I was involved in High Power competition but, have found it useful for other purposes. The loads I have found for MY rifles are:
.30-30-- 25 grains with the Lyman 311407; velocity-- 1866 fps;
7.62x39-- 25 grains with a custom 165 grain cast bullet; velocity-- 1953 fps;
.300 Savage-- 38 grains with 150 jacketed bullets; velocity-- 2566 fps;
.223 Rem.-- 23 grains with 69 grain target bullets; velocity-- 2730 fps.
In my .308 with 150 grain bullets, 40 grains WC-844 produced 2663 fps while 40 grains H-335 produced 2565. HTH
