Reloder7 in 444 Marlin

Post by wolfdog »

I have about 4 pounds of Re7 and a bunch of 240 grain soft points I would like to use in my 444 Marlin. None of my manuels show loads for this combo, but should be a good one. Aliant's websight shows a load using 50 grains, but do not have any other info, i.e. is this a minimum or max load, I would guess max. If thats the case should I start out at about 47 grains?

In my Speer book #13 shows for 240 grain JHP or JSP 51C (which is compressed charge) is MAX load, mzl. velocity 2355. Starting load is 49 grains, mzl. velocity 2263. R-P cases, CCI 200 and barrel length was 24" were used for testing. Your mileage may very.

A friend of mine loves his 444 but I don't think he's using Reloader 7 but I could check.

My best load to date for the .444 is -
240gr. Hornady XTP
50.0gr RE7
Remington 9 1/2 primer (have tried this load with CCI and Winchester but the Rem primer shines.. Sweet Spot?)

2296 fps. ES= 11.8 SD= 5.6

My Marlin puts five into one ragged hole at 50yd. with reciever sight and factory front.
I bet a good rifle with scope will do very fine with this combo.
Have fun!

Speer manual #14 shows following loads with Reloder 7 and 240grs. bullets:
Start charge: 46.0grs., Maximum charge 50.0grs. Case Remington,
I have great results with Remington 240grs. Soft Point bullets over 49.0grs. of Reloder 7, CCI 200 and Remington brass.
This load works great in my Winchester Timber 18 1/2".

I usually keep a 5 pound container of RL-7 on the shelf expressly for the 444 although sometimes it gets used in the 204 RUger or possibly a heavy barrel 223 .

But I gotta admit all my RL-7 loads for the 444 have been with 325 grain or heavier bullets !

Reloader 7 works great with 400 grain cast bullets in Ballard rifled faster twist 444's

Unfortunatlely my 44 has a microgrove barrel, so big heavys are out of the picture. Mostly want to get sosmething close to the factory RP load, which my rifle likes pretty well.

Actually they are not out of the question !

True you cannot do much with the 400 grainers but anything 375 grains or below you can !

I own no less then 24 Marlin 444's with Micro Groove slow twist barrels and I shoot 5 different bullets that are 365 to 375 grains in them with good success !

I have 375 grain molds from LBT , MM and BRP , an NEI mold that is about 370 grains and BRP made me a HP of the 375 mold that also comes in at about 368 grains .

I will have to keep an eye out for some then. I never could come up with a heavy cast bullet load I was happy with in my 1895 45/70, which is one of the reasons I parted ways with it.

I got good results with 50.0gr Reloder 7 and 240gr Hornady XTP's but found I got slightly better accuracy with the 300gr XTP's over 45.0gr Reloder 7. :D
