MOVIES - Lonely are the Brave

Post by M. M. Wright »

Sorta OT but have you guys seen the movie "Lonely Are The Brave"? Stars Kirk Douglas as John W. Burns who shoots down a helicopter with his 92 Winchester take-down. George Kennedy plays the jailhouse thumper and is a general bad guy. Walter Mathau is the sheriff who chases him up Sandia Mountain, (it's set in Albuquerque). Has been my favorite movie since first seeing it in about 1962.

Is that the one where his horse gets hit by a truck?

:?:
Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

Yup, sad ending but great movie. I remember as a kid seeing it at the movies and initially being disappointed by the opening shot of Kirk Douglas waking up in the desert to see jets flying over head, probably my first modern day western but like I said, a great movie.

Great movie, based on a great book, The Brave Cowboy by Edward Abbey.

Another great one that I'll bet many in this gang of ours would enjoy is Fire On The Mountain, also by Abbey. - DixieBoy

I just watched it again a few weeks ago. We visited family in Albuquerque, hiked to the top of Sandia Mtn.(9.5 miles and 3800' elevation gain, a good walk for 60 year olds), and rode the tram down. I got the movie to show my wife what it looked like in 1962. One thing I am not sure of about the rifle. I didn't notice it was a take down in the early scenes. Of course toward the end we see it taken down, but if I had had time I would have liked to see if it was the same rifle early on.

Of course after watching the movie I had to check out the book again. Great movie and book. I have to say that The Fools Progress is my favorite Abbey novel. I had to reread it again too.

FWiedner,
Yeah, he gets hit by a truck load of toilet bowls driven by Carol O'conner. In the book, if I remember correctly, its Johnny on the Spots.
I remember it was a SRC in the early scenes but will have to look again to see if it's the same rifle in the last scenes.

Kirk Douglas said that was his favorite movie... It's my favorite of his movies too... I'm pretty sure it is the same type rifle all the way thru... I always wondered where the other half of the rifle went...

Thought it was an 86 EL takedown but could be wrong. He must buy fat boots or have skinny legs. I sure can't stuff half of a takedown in my boots for a splint

I've never read any of those but I did enjoy "The Monkey Wrench Gang."

This movie comes up on satalite every couple months and I've seen it few times. I generally enjoy it and it may be my favorite Mathau role.

Great movie. One of my favorites if not my favorite. As someone said, Kirk said it was his favorite. What a great actor! I've got it on VCR. Is it available now on DVD?

One of the movies I like about as much stars Paul Newman. 'Cool Hand Luke.' Great movie. Great beginning: He's had too much to drink and cutting-off the tops of parking meters. That oughta make you go for it right there!

'Out Of Africa' is another of my favorites. Beautiful soundtrack.

I rate the Monkey Wrench novels, there were two, along with A Fool's Progress, as Abbey's best fiction. His nonfiction is excellent writing as well. I have read most, if not all, of Abbey's work. He is one of my favorite authors.

I placed an interlibrary loan request with my public library. I hope to have it in hand in a coupla' weeks. Sounds like a wonderful movie, and I was unaware of it until just now!

Thank you!
