OT--375 H&H scope suggestions

Post by getitdone1 »

Am in the market for a good scope for my Browning A-Bolt chambered for 375 H&H.

Think'in straight 3X or maybe 1-5X variable.

What I especially want is a scope that'll have lots of eye relief and be easy to get reticule quickly back in view for 2nd shot. Again, must be easy to quickly find reticule for repeat shots.

About a 2 minute illuminated red dot would be nice. Maybe larger.

Scope gotta be tough/reliable.

Any suggestions?

Mine has had a Leupold straight 4x on it for 30 yrs without problems. Since I have other big-bores for the real "up-close and personal" hunting I've done, the .375 has been used for large, (non-dangerous) game where ranges over 50 yds. would be the norm.
Hope this helps...

How about a Leupold straight fixed 2.5. I doubt you could tell any differance between a 3x and 2.5 and Leupold makes a darn good product.

For more money and more mag. a Leupold 1.5x-5x is a great scope.

Don, I recently purchased a scope that I think would be just the ticket for the new rifle you are wanting. It's a Leupold European 30mm 1.25x4x20 with a German #4 reticle. Very clear and with both eyes open at short range, VERY quick target aquisition! Another, would be the VXIII 1-5x20(20mm) with heavy duplex or German reticle at about the same price. Midway has some interesting reviews, by owners, on many models of scopes on their site that you can read as you pull up individual models. By the way, should you want a bit more magnification, The VXII 2-7x33, VXIII 1.75-6x32 and European 30mm 2-7x33 both have adequate eye relief and some excellent reticle options.

1.5 to 5x Leupold would be my choice. It is an excellent scope. I have had one for a long time on a Model 7, 7-08. I think it nicely covers the range and doesn't make a big gun too heavy.

I'm running a Vari X II in 2x7x32 on my model 70 Classic 375 H&H.

I suppose the rapid on and off scope mounts--tough enough for the 375 recoil--would be rather pricey.

With no scope at all I wouldn't have to worry about quickly finding sights, cut eyebrow or scope breakdown. Less weight too.

No scope is possible.

Don, The best made anywhere; Warne Maxima QD rings will run you $65 along with $399 for the best scope for the money...the Leupold 30mm 1.25-4x20. I can promise that if you get the low rings, you will be amazed at how quickly you can sight on something as close as 5 yards with the German #4 reticle!! Good luck with your choice!

+1 for the Leupold 2.5 fixed power. Mine is mounted in Leupold QR rings (I had to make the bases as I used an Enfield action for this rifle). I have fired over 200 rounds through my .375, and no problems with scope or mounts.

I've never had 30mm scopes or scope rings. Can't see the reason for their existence.

They've always said the fixed-power scope is more durable than the variable. Of course the good variables have proven themselves by now.
Still would seem the fixed-power simplicity would be more durable.

I recall the old Lyman Alaskan 2.5X was a famous fixed-powered scope. Think the one I seen (about 1968) had a dot reticule.

Lots of good responses. I would humbly suggest that you pick up a copy of John Barseness "Optics for the Hunter". Very good treatise on the pros and cons of 30mm vs. 1" scope tubes.

Good luck in your choice

I used a leupold vx-II 3-9 on mine and it worked fine. Depending on what you you are going to hunt you may want the increase in magnification. Though when I used mine in AK for brown bear (only thing I've shot with the rifle) I kept it on 3x.

I have only had one 375 H & H and that was some years back. It was a Winchester 70 and the scope was a 2.5K Bushnell Scopechief with "command post" reticule. It had standard cross hair, but flip a lever an a think post fliped up. The scope worked just fine.
