Where do you shoot?

Post by Pitchy »

I put this window in my garage and made a couple back stops, first for 22s is at 30 yards and far one is at 50 yards.
The other back stop i can get 175 yard shots at.

Lucky you!

My set up is going to one of two local indoor ranges or one outdoor one about 50 miles away.

None of which is worth the time any more.

My club in Lander, WY, has a nice indoor range for .22's only less than 1/2 mile from my house. Also an outdoor range with pistol, high power, all manners of silhouette, whatever you want to do, out to 1000 yards. $25.00 a year for the keys to both.

I also have my own range out to 100 meters on my own place up in the mountains, can only access it about 5 months out of the year due to snowdrifts, but the price is right. :D Impossible to get good pics , it's in the thick trees.

I'm lucky enough to rent a small pad on a 50 acre estate and get to shoot squirrels and rabbits when ever I like, there is also a chalk pit that I can set up targets.

My son and his Remington Express.
Image

Squirrels keep coming past my window so the 9422 is never far away.
Image

Even my Russian 16GA gets out of the safe occasionally.

If I'm feeling lucky my AR7 can do the job.

The Missouri Department of Conservation owns well over 20,000 acres in this county.
There is no place to legally set up a target.

I have to drive thirty miles to my club's range in Kansas.

Our club range is about 10 minutes away. Close enough that on a calm day I can here the larger caliber rifles from my yard.

Pitchy,
I am very fortunate to be able to shoot (short or long distances)on my own property.
Have 100 yard, 200yard, and 300 yard simple/modest ranges setup.
Can shoot all day long with no concerns
Everyday is a blessing!

Though, I do also belong to a Gun Club about 12miles away!

Thirty years into it, we've built a covered bench...

Added a cheap plastic garden-tool rack that works for other things...

And cleared a (barely) 100 yard stretch...

And added a chronograph support (had to cantilever it to raise it due to steep hillside)...

Our Club is right at 30min drive from me.

It was developed as a Trap Club to draw the kind of Social Set that the land owner wants to hob-nob with, but they added a Pistol, .22, and 300yd Rifle range to keep the membership up.

I can shoot Muzzleloaders in a much closer Fish & Game area, but that's not really what it's for.

I like jnyork's Lander Range... of course, it was there when I was growing up there, so I'm somewhat partial, but still...

I'm jealous of some of you. My place is 400 yards deep and 200 yards wide, but the only thing i dare shoot is the occasional load of .22 shorts from my Henry. I am considering investing in an airgun too. (neighbor's too close )

Although interestingly enough , i unloaded half a magazine of .45 ACP into a very large bull snake about a month ago, and i didn't get a single phone call , ---- then again, perhaps the neighbor's thought they should just leave me alone with that kind of hot action going on  -- i was really expecting i would have to explain myself to a local constable for that one

Mostly, I shoot at my 100 yd. range out my back door. We've lived here about 14 years. I didn;t start shooting again (after a 20 yr hiatus) until 4 years ago. In the back of my mind when we bought this place, I had this idea that I couldn't discuss with SWMBO because she was pretty much anti-gun. Once both kids were interested in shooting, it was easier to set up the range.

I shoot at a private range in the middle of San Antonio. We have mostly trap shooting, but also have pistol, 50 yard and 100 yard shooting. It's pretty close to home, and it's nice to be alone at a range. I'm able to take reloading gear when working up a new load and load and test right there.

The only thing is that I'm very, very careful when there by myself. Those two goblins who killed two FBI agents in Miami in 1986 got some of their guns by sneaking up on people shooting alone, although it was in a much more public place.

All my best,

You might consider a suppressor; the cost may vary from $400 to $1000 depending on whether you want to suppress one firearm, or many, and want to suppress a .22 LR, .357 Mag, or .444 Marlin.

The Liberty 'Mystic' can handle .357 Magnum and any lesser diameter calibers within reason (including .223 Remington from rifle-length barrels and up to full-auto rates of fire). So, you could get one 'can', and use it on your AR-15, .22 Hornet, .32-20, .357 Mag, .357 Max, and whatever pistols you want. In addition - you can use it on the RIMFIRE rounds that are notoriously 'dirty' and require a suppressor that can be disassembled for cleaning.

The Thompson Machine "Operative" is designed for the Ruger 10/22, but can be made to work on a Ruger 96/22 levergun as well, if you have one of those. The advantage of integral suppressors like the 'Operative' is that they barely change the appearance and balance of the gun, but the trade-off is that they are generally not something you can take off one gun and put on another. In the case of the Ruger 10/22, the 'modular' design of the firearm and barrel is such that you actually can switch the integrally-suppressed barrel in just a couple minutes to any other Ruger 10/22 or 96/22 (the 77/22 is doable, but would require permanent modification of the intergrally-suppressed barrel, rendering it no longer useful for the 10/22 and 96/22).

Another levergun forum member posted pics of his "backyard suppressor" that was essentially a 55-gallon-drum-sized thing up on legs that he could fire his gun 'in' (sighting through the regular sights, as the device had some 8" or so 'hole' through it, but was filled with fiberglass batting or something to muffle sound). Of course the device wasn't exactly 'mobile', and restricted shooting to from one position and in one direction, but it was quiet, legal, and no $200 'stamp' required.

I could shoot in my yard but my wife and our horses seem to prefer that that I didn't. So there are some old dead trees about 2 miles south of our house that I shoot into. Has natural backdrop (creekbank). i can shoot between ten and fifty yards, so I usually shoot handguns and 22s there. BUT, a good friend of mine has purchased 80 acres about 8 miles north of me and wants my help to build a range. I am looking forward to that.

There is a public shooting area on some Bureau Of Land Management land about eight miles away. It's flat for 120 yards, then goes fairly steep uphill out to 300+ yards. My favorite shooting spot though is Hat Creek Rifle & Pistol Club, located 66 miles east of me near Burney, CA. It is mainly a silhouette shooting club, with a rifle range out to 750 yards and a 200 yard pistol range. I shoot the Cowboy Lever Action Silhouette matches. FUN, FUN, FUN! :D

When I lived in Jeff City, MO there was a nice DNR maintained range that we used to shoot at. My nephew in Garden City, KS belongs to the Sand & Sage Gun Club that has a fantastic range, including a 600 yard range, If I didn't live 5 hours away, I would join their club and shoot every weekend.

Rifle line goes out to 500 yards; combined rifle/pistol line out to 175. Plus another 50 yd pistol-only line course, a 600 yard competition -- includinmg NRA snac tioned Black Powder Cartridge Rifle silhouette range as well as trap and sporting clays.

Opens at 7:30 AM, closes at dusk/sunset.

I build this shooting bench about 7 or 8 years ago. A week ago I went to the scrap yard and bought some steel plates of various sizes (25 cents/lb). I have them at 200, 300, and 400 yards. I need to weld a couple pieces together for 500 yards. But so far the Win 94 in 38-55 hits them nicely. My buddy is coming over this morning to try out his high wall and I will be trying a bunch more rifles starting with the 444.

That's always on my mind. As you might have read on my land for sale in Clasified I have plenty of area to shoot at my cabin. A 650 yard gong range for my 45-110 Sharps and and a pistol range next to my cabin. That land is 75 miles from here. I can shoot here at home just a few mins. from the Duluth city limits. A new home behind me now and I'm surrounded by people. They are about two to three hundred yards away, but I can only get a pistol range figured out, and that's shooting down hill, not the best. On a positive note, gunfire is quite common around here in the evening and always expected.
I also belong to a gun club that has a nice range 12 miles away. I think the grandkids and I will go there today.

I can still shoot on private timberland about 5 minutes from my house. I can shoot out to 100 yards there. That will most likely be gated in the near future due to the inconsiderate morons that dump trash and tires on the timberland. The owners are sick and tired of having to clean up the messes. Whenever I shoot there, I pick up all of the litter that I brought, targets, etc, right down to spent 22 cases.

There is a gun club about 30 miles from here tha I occasionally use, but for now, my preference is the hill behind the house!

Maybe you could make a deal with the land owner that would allow you to use the land in exchange for cleaning it up a little. Or if they gate it maybe you could have a key.

try to not irritate thy neighbor's I don't do much shooting before 9am and not usually after 10pm unless there's skunks or dogs or other varmits around. I believe we owe it to any possible new neighbors to shoot alot so they know what there getting into. Kind pf like peaple who move next to the race track or airport and complain about the noise.

Right on. Being nice, but keeping the right to shoot.

A few years back the county sheriff stopped by and said '' someone reported shots fired arround here'' I said yes, I shot. He said oh, have a good day. That hasn't happened since, but it would if we don't keep shooting.

Howdy,
No pix, but I have a 50yd and a 100 yd range in my backyard. The gravel pit a mile down the road goes out to about 300 yds. I also belong to a local gun club range that goes about 400 yds. It's 20 min away, but I don't get over there much...
I feel extremely lucky to have such an arrangement...

I belong to a club aout 20 minutes away. $80(?) a year for both
the wife and I. Indoor range is open 24/7/365. No jacketed ammo,
no gas checks, no magnum cases, no rifle calibers. 1000 fps limit.
Outdoor has 4 ranges - 2 50-yard pistol ranges, (one with covered
firing points, one without), 50-yard 22 range with benches and
covered firing points, and a 200-yard main range with covered
firing points and benches. Best entertainment value in central
Maine.

Inland Fisheries and Wildlife has also just opened a public range
in some old gravel pits almost across the street from the afore-
mentioned facility. Folks have shot there for years, and have also
used the area for ATVing. Sometimes at the same time(!). So, in
the interst of safety, the State rerouted the ATV trails, put up signs,
and bulldozed a range out. It's been open about 2 weeks.

Both facilities are in the Capitol City of Augusta. :o 8) Try that in Boston,
Springfield, Albany, Sacramento, or any of a number of other State
Capitols we could name.....

I shoot mostly air at home, although once in awhile I'll use
some powder. The neighbors are close, and too much shooting
will eventually annoy somebody.

Varmints are fair game, and it's understood that a big buck in
the front yard during deer season WILL be shot!

Re: Where do you shoot?

I shoot in on my property and at an organized club. I often shoot .22s from my patio into a bullet trap attached to a tree at the edge of the yard. This is especially nice for .22 handguns. For longer stuff, I walk out behind my shed to my shooting bench and shoot into this:

Due to the lay of the land, I can only go about 50 yards with this set-up. I built a box around the pictured metal swingers to safely contain bullet fragments that result from hitting target edges and brackets. Without that containment, those fragments (some mostly whole bullets) can go quite a distance. The large swingers are AR500 steel, so I can shoot centerfires at them. This backstop is 'modular' in that the swinger brackets easily lift off and are replaced with a target board for paper targets or IDPA targets.

When I need to sight in or play at longer ranges (or do extended large caliber shooting without bothering neighbors) I go to one of the best ranges in the country (St. Louis Benchrest Club) about 45 minutes from my place (half way between my property and the city). This place has a superb clubhouse, multiple ranges including a covered 60 point range to 600 yards, a covered 20 point range to 100 yards, a 300 yard range, multiple handgun ranges, etc. Their website:
