Re: What is the big infatuation with black powder?

Post by Nate Kiowa Jones »

Joe, all the reasons above are valid personal choices. But the one fact that gives BP an edge over smokeless is the fact that for long range like the BPCR Silhouette game where these guys are shooting out to 600 meters BP is much more accurate.
That game requires bullets in the 500 gr or larger pushed at about 1200 FPS, no more. Big slow bullets like that aren't effected by wind near like faster smaller bullets. But, the load has to be very consistant. Compressed bp loads do that with really low standard deviation. Combined with quality repeatable sights some say they are more accurate than scoped smokeless rifles.

Steam locomotive, Harley? No valid analogy there. I have used my share of BP, but no longer. The though of running that stuff through a nice condition 1886 makes me quake in fear. I have done it, and suffered the clean up with hot water, a thousand patches to wipe it clean and the mess of trash in the action. Nope, never more. Smokeless gives me the option to clean, or not to clean. All that is usually done after shooting is to run a bore snake through and fo'get about it.

:o Good lord you're clean up opporations suck :o
First thing to clean a bp loaded rifle is take your blow tube and blow about 4 breaths in each end of the barrel, then run a dry patch on a jag down the tube. ( simply turn a lever gun so the open action is pointing down) then follow with a couple of damp patches ( water works well or add a bit of simplegreen etc) then a couple dry ones and unless your lube really sucks or you haven't figured out what diameter bullet to use and you have some lead mining to do , those dry patches should of came out clean , so run an oily patch down the tube, wipe your grubby finger prints off the gun with the oily patch and put things away.
Punch out the primers in the empty cases and clean them when you get around to it.
And a bore snake won't clean a sick prostitute off a pot, those things are good for making you feel like you did something. :?

Maybe this'll answer the question better: "Smokeless powder is just a passing fad, and some of us wanna be ahead of the curve when it falls from favor!"

Hey Joe if you's thinks us BP users are nuts,,,,,, some of us still flirt pointy sticks from bows!

Last week I hunted a deer with my 308, it was boring! The first deer in years and I just was not excited.

All I could think about that week end was 'if only I was here with my musket or bow'.

It is just more interesting due to the extra effort required.

Smokeless just hurts my ears to much any way :D

Bow hunting is something else that hasn't been an interest to me. In 65 years, I might have touched a bow thrice. Nostalgic hunting to me is the use of an old iron sighted Winchester, especially in a no longer loaded by any REGULAR commercial company caliber. Even if they load what I shoot I won't be buyin' 'em. Too high a cost and too simple to load 'yer own.

Don, it has been a looooong time since any black was passed down my gun's bores. My clean up was the old fashioned boiling water and oily patches method. Bore snakes do work on rifles with use of smokeless. All 'ya gotta do is get most of the residue out and call it good. For grins I took my 105 year old .45-90 down and went out into the 100º garage and wiped a couple of patches through the bore. It still glows like it always did and remains as pristine as it was. No copper fouling evident from the use of HV Barnes TSX loads in the old girl. :)

Absolutely not. Black powder is not only the historically correct propellant but also among the most accurate and easy to use. It is easy to clean up and if you only use natural lubricants like bore butter will not be a problem. You can get to love the smell and the smoke. I also use P but like fffg the best. There is an emotional charge to shooting black powder.

My daughter wanted BP, not me. I bought one to keep her interested. She got me a little hooked. Gotta say, I use Bore Butter as the lube for the bolt in my Remy .308.

Bull pucky! That wise crack offends me.

Joe
Its not a wise crack Joe. Nor was it intended as one.

Its reflective of a certain nostalgia people have over weapons, tools, or events of our past or our history.

Some of us enjoy the flavor of things gone by and try, in our own ways to get some sort of inkling of the experience and of our heritage.

If you are not so inclined, you would look at reenactors, and folks like us and not understand or not care to understand why we do it.

And if we tried to explain, you probably wouldn't understand our motivations.

All I can say is:
It was not directed at you personally.
It was not meant as a wise crack.

So, my friend if my posts offend you, don't read them.

Joe - you can introduce a topic but you can't command it. You also cannot claim to be anachronistic and not get black powder. Obviously other people do. If you don't get it - you don't get it. The guy is right and it has been expressed over and over in the last pages. You cannot open a topic and at the same time dictate the outcome. JOE ---- YOU are not in charge!!!. Neither is anyone else. You start it and it will go where it will - that is the nature of the beast. In fact - :D :D :D - one of the fun things is seeing where is will go.

But, there is a somewhat inexpressible joy to shooting black powder. :D

Now Joe,
How about you are not in control of that and aren't about to be. Once they are posted they are essentially public property. Well I do not consider you a foe but if you want to you can do that you can. I did it with one fellow and I do enjoy not seeing what he says but I find your posts interesting and I find what the other posters say on them interesting as they have been here. In fact among the folks I most always read you are one. And, I suspect so it will remain. Again, you can control what you do here but not what others do.

I have used my share of BP, but no longer. The though of running that stuff through a nice condition 1886 makes me quake in fear. Thanks Mike - I had wondered about that without ever having done it. I will take your experience here and not bother to repeat it with repeaters.

I love Black Powder....it really is like a time machine to pull the trigger on a longrifle with real BP. Just not interested in it for my cartridge guns for the same reason Mike D mentions. Something like a Sharps begs for it though, would have no problems there.

Dang! What'd I miss?

I don't shoot BP cause I can't buy it locally and am too cheap to pay the shipping/haz fee. If I was more involved with the BPCR crowd I'd try it, but I think I have to go 150 miles to participate in that. I do love that BOOM and smell.
