OT--Bear Traps

This is a Duke D trap, approx 36 in long.
Made the setter for it.

Back in the day when i first moved to this country there were wild women running around in the woods everywhere so i had to trap one, thus how i got my wife of 29 years.

Don`t worry her leg healed up nicely with only a slight limp.

Just kidding of course.

Once again, an extremely cool post

I do have a question for you. Do you have any idea how many pounds for each spring it takes to set your trap? I have a #6 and have never been able to set it. I was told it takes 400 pounds for each spring. Sure, I could set it with a couple of big c-clamps--with pipes for leverage. One time I had a couple of 220 pound "good 'ole boys" down in my gunroom with one guy on each spring pushing down with their feet and pushing up with their arms on the basement rafters and we still could not get it done. Besides, even if they got the springs down, I was not about to reach in there to set the pan.

Don`t know, we had two of us standing on the springs and couldn`t set it either. I did set it with big C clamps once , that works kinda sorta.
That setter i made works nice, i put my knees on it and put my weight on it and it sqeezes them springs right down. I then reach under the jaw and set the pan and then i put a board under the pan so it can`t release until i get the setter off.
Sure would hate to mess up.

I stepped in the smaller version of one of those when I was a kid. Hurt like hell. Darn lucky it didn't break my ankle.

Edit, ok i see how the up rights would scissor down to the sides so the spikes are pointed up and they would then hold the spring down.
The flat piece on the bottom must be the trigger and the small vertical rod must have something to do with the set.
Must be for bear as high as the spikes are.

I tell 'ya, that Pitchy could have made a Space Shuttle.

That is extremely cool. I bet that in another lifetime, Pitchy made all those anti-burglar devices (that shot bullets) back in the 1800's.

I've always wanted to have Claymores set all around the compound here at the Sixgun homestead but as those buggers are a little hard to get I could have Pitchy rig me up with a few dozen of those mechanical contraptions he makes. Wadda you say Pitchy? Can I put my order in for 20 of those--but a little bigger

Check it out guys, full size bear trap, quite a job but it works.
When it`s snapped you can`t spread the jaws open it`s locked in.

It looks pretty good painted. But, I'm still trying to figure out what that tall sizzer type trap is for. I've seen lots of different traps in pictures, antique shops, stores and such, but I've never seen one like that.
It looks like the sizzer jaws with the spikes are designed to really grab, smash, puncture and hold something that passes through it.

It should get the job done that's for sure.

Holy stuff, Pitchy! If you saw a bear at 200 yards and amblin' your way, you could have a trap made and set before by the time he got there!

Alan, yep it gets pretty powerful when the jaws get up higher. Little slow out of the gate but considering i`d never seen a trap like this other than the picture it works pretty good.
Tomorrow i`m going to set my bow and arrow dummy deer in it and see what the damage is.

At first when I looked at it I thought it might be for horizontal use. You know set it and put it at the opening of a den or a hole. When the critter comes out .... WHACK!
But then I don't see any way to trip it laying that way.

Yep it`s a weird design and why i built it.
I`m not a trapper and would never subject an animal to such a device, i just like anything unusual and mechanical and like to build things.
I`m not happy with the trigger set up so going to change that today, thanks for looking.

Maybe you should get a side of beef and put it where those jaws will get it, then trip it. Do a test run on a dead critter like 86er does. That aughta give some idea of what those arms would do.

For real---No BS-------Pitchy would be a great guy to have around when (not if) the third Revolution happens. He even got that baby all painted up.

Not many guys can fabricate things like that out of their head. I'm impressed.

I just got home from a miserable day at work (100 degrees today with all of that Eastern humidity) and can't do nothing outside so I came in and tuned in to see what the boys are up to and low and behold, I see Pitchy has been hard at work.

I'm curious Pitchy, how do make the springs? Is it spring steel or do you do something to give it tension?------------------------Sixgun

Thanks Joe and Sixgun.
The spring is the long leaf from a trailer leaf spring, cut one end off and welded the ring on the jaw end. Worked pretty good as trying to make a spring that big is a hassle.
There`s a little steel block under the end it pivots on that makes it work.

It was real hot here for a couple days but now it`s in the 60`s again, just right.

A trailer leaf spring? Pretty neat. A good friend of mine who spent the year of 1968 in Nam told me the Vietnamese could make just about anything out of anything. Goes to show you how adaptable our brains can be when you want them to be

Made longer spikes and lowered them a little, also increased the spring pressure so it snaps faster and harder.
Does a nice job of holding that bag of rags at bay.

Thanks Pitchy. I am in awe of your fabricating skills. I wonder what that trap is called? Here in Missouri there have been references to a "killer conibear" trap in the regs for years. Could this possibly be one of those? I am totally ignorant when it comes to trapping.
