Sad news indeed.

Last night me and my father (who is visiting from out of town) were sitting around watching some DVR'd Gunsmoke and Bonanza episodes and talking about how all of the start were dead except him and that the sad part is he could go any day now. Didnt think it would be the very next day.

May he Rest In Peace. Thank you for the years and years of good Cowboy shows.

He always reminded me of my Grandfather on my Dad's side.
A couple inches shorter but Grandpa B. looked a lot like him.

Grandpa ran the Arizona border back in the late 20's on the Border Patrol.
Always loved those stories. A wild and wonderful time.

This makes me very sad.

God Bless "Marshall Dillon." A true American hero.

Beside his early role as "The Thing" in the 50's SciFi classic....Jim Arness was defined in his lifetime as Marshall Dillon. As a kid loyally watching the show...taking care of Dodge City with a sixgun, and hanging out in a saloon with an "over-the-top painted lady" were defining objectives for me. Never got my own town, but I have managed to spend a lot of time in saloons, with my trusty sidearm, and more than a few "painted ladies".
Never realized at the time what influences were defining ME.
RIP Matthew......

I think the world is just a little less for his passing, because he touched a lot of lives.

It's kinda sad for those left behind, but a glorious thing when a good man moves on to the next thing.

I hope The Boss gives him a good horse.

Gunsmoke was one of the best shows on television, first in b&w, then in color. It ran for 20 years! Great stories and interesting characters. The quiet strength and sincerity of Marshall Dillon drew us all in. James Arness was a war hero (bronze star) and his war wounds made it tough to get around and especially tough to ride a horse.

A couple of years ago, James Arness did an interview and it is on-line.

I was going to tell this group about the death of James Arness but thought I'd better do a search and see if someone beat me to it.

I'd like to add a few things:

James Arness, May 26, 1923-June 3, 2011.

I've always heard he was 6'7" rather than 6'6". Clint Walker of the Cheyenne western TV series was 6'6" and said Arness was a little taller.

James Arness website: http://www.jamesarness.com

Both Arness and Walker were a class act in all ways. Walker is 4 years younger than Arness.

You can buy many of the Gunsmoke shows on DVD from http://www.amazon.com There's also 3 "Western" DVD's starring Arness when he was "getting up in years." I have them and they are good. You can also buy some of the Cheyenne shows via Amazon.

Clint Walker website: www.clintwalker.com

I am sure both of these men were aided greatly in getting their famous roles simply by the goodness of their character.

I like both he and his brother quite a bit. James starred in one of my favorite flying movies with The Duke, "Island in the Sky" ( http://www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi761528345/ ) where he was just fantastic (as is Wayne, one of his finest performances).

Sorry to hear!
