marlin large loop for 336 and others

Post by rusty shackelford »

please bear with me on the photo bucket thing first time there

been doing so playing with marlin loops this is a picture of my secone one made the first loop was welded with a high contient of stainless steel (tig) and didn't blue that good , this second one was welded with a carbon steel wire in a mig
I made a fixture to set the loop and drilled holes to secure it tight the
fixture has two plates the large main plate and a smaller loop plate bolted to the top. i can do some picture if need of the fixture

the lever came from e-bite and was damaged broken in half pitted and rusty but for a couple of bucks what the hay...bead blasted the lever too. before starting
tried to polish most of the pitting from it but it is too bad so I will live with it for a part to see if blueing comes out ok.

what do you guy think ? is it to big of a loop or do you need to see it on a gun ? that will be the best way to tell.
the lever piece in the photo is from the first lever i did so please don't compare the finish

thanks for the lever space

The image button should be used before and after each image file link.
last link has too many ht's at the front of the link, otherwise looking good.
Brownells has a nickle welding rod that should blue nice. haven't tried it
yet but ordering some today to build up my takedown latch on a marlin,
could also be used to fill the pitting is what I'm thinkin.

I was able to open the two middle pictures and your work looks great. It would be better to see it on a rifle though.

Interesting to me because I was thinking about asking my ex brother in law (the welder, machinist, tool & die, edm operator) about making me up 4 or 5 large loops for Marlin lever actions. I wanted one each for a pair of 336s (a 30/30 and another for 35 Rem).

These are true Michigan hunting rifles and the large loop would make them easier to use with winter gloves.

Wm

P.S. I figured I keep the other 3 back in case I liked the new loops so much that I decided to do other Marlins.

sorry about the picture not opening new to that ,
the jig i made should hold the loops equal to each other
unless i want or need a different design.
i will post picture of it unblued on my rifle to see if the design is ok
seems to feel go for me and my semi large hands.
if you want better ofr more picture e-mail me and i will shoot them off to you .

Looks good. It's whatever you like that matters most.

Looks like good work to me. Some enlarged levers feel better than others. Try it and see how you like it. Also, the size needed might vary a bit by where you are and how cold it gets so the thickness of gloves might make a difference, etc.
